France stand just one win away from punching their ticket to the 2026 World Cup, and they’ll be eager to get the job done on Monday night when they square off against Iceland in a crucial qualifier.
The hosts, however, aren’t here to simply make up the numbers. Iceland have shown flashes of promise with a new generation coming through, and they’ve already proven they can rattle the giants, they even took the lead in their narrow 2-1 loss to France at the Parc des Princes last month. Their fearlessness was on display again in Reykjavik recently, though defensive lapses cost them dearly in a 5-3 defeat to Ukraine.

Team news & squads
Iceland team news
For France, it’s been smooth sailing results-wise, but not without turbulence in performance. Les Bleus have won all three of their qualifiers, yet none have been truly dominant. Their 3-0 win over Azerbaijan in Paris looked tidy on paper but lacked the sparkle expected from a side boasting this much firepower. Goals from Kylian Mbappe, Adrien Rabiot, and Florian Thauvin were enough to mask a performance that felt more labored than lethal.
Didier Deschamps’ men will have to make at least one change this time around, with Desire Doue sidelined through injury. Hugo Ekitike is expected to step in, adding youthful energy to a frontline that already includes Mbappe, Bradley Barcola, and Michael Olise. Behind them, Manu Kone and Aurelien Tchouameni will once again hold down the midfield engine room, while Ibrahima Konate and Dayot Upamecano remain the bedrock of the defence.
France team news
As for Iceland, expect them to stick to the formula that’s been working in attack. Victor Palsson, Daniel Ingason, and Holmar Gretarsson will form a sturdy defensive trio, while Isak Thordarson and Albert Johannesson are set to flank Andri Gudjohnsen, the young forward tasked with unsettling France’s usually composed backline.
