  9. Misleading post/article title. As originally reported by industry publications (not scraped/edited by the site linked in this post) Russia’s *seaborne* exports fell by 17.1% from August to September. This included reduced refined fuel shipments, and increased unrefined crude oil shipments.

    While there is no doubt that Ukraine’s targeting of Russian refineries has had a demonstrable impact on numerous refinery operations/output/exports, and both short- and long-term supply and marketability, this article notes some additional elements at play in the downward trending maritime exports:

    *Earlier, it was reported that in 2024, Russia’s seaborne oil product exports fell 9.1 % to 113.7 million tons, driven by Ukrainian attacks on refineries, export bans, weaker prices, and rising costs.*

    As is often the case, more nuanced than as misrepresented in a headline. As Russia pivots to focus more on domestic supply, a double whammy with equally successive hits by Ukraine on Russia’s internal pipeline network would have an even bigger impact. A long cold winter of Russian discontent.

  12. That headline doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. You’d think that, if their capacity to refine oil is substantially reduced, they would start exporting *more* of the unrefined stuff, not less. Unless the wells have also been hit, but I haven’t heard anything about that.
