IOWA CITY, Iowa — A former University of Iowa employee has pled guilty to charges stemming from using the school’s resources in his personal business.
Brian Busch entered the plea Monday, admitting to first degree theft and fraudulent practice. Other charges including tampering with records were dismissed.
In 2021, a state audit revealed Busch had funneled nearly $1 million into his business, D3signtech, over four years. In his role as the Manager of the Department of Physics and Astronomy Machine Shop, Busch and his staff were completing jobs for his company while also working for the university.
Busch will pay $173,097.60 in restitution to the university as part of the plea. The state is expected to recommend three years of probation on a ten year suspended sentence.
His sentencing date has not been set.
