A new play exploring the realities of migration is heading to Newport.
Dial 1 for UK, written and performed by Indian actor and theatre-maker Mohit Mathur, will be staged at The Riverfront on Friday, November 8, as part of its UK tour.
The critically acclaimed play tells the story of Uday Kumar, a call-centre worker in New Delhi who dreams of starting a new life in London.
Mr Mathur said: “Dial 1 for UK is my way of holding up a mirror to the dream of migration—the fantasy of life in the West, and the reality that so many of us face when we arrive.
“It’s funny, painful, and deeply personal.
“I want South Asian audiences to see themselves on stage, but I also want all audiences to question how we treat those who come here in search of a better life.”
The 55-minute play, directed by Phil Willmott, uses humour and heart to tackle themes of racism, broken promises, people trafficking, and loneliness.
It promises an “unflinching yet uplifting” look at the pursuit of the British dream.
Uday’s journey is filled with contrasts—helping crypto investors by night and posting upbeat YouTube videos by day.
When an opportunity to move to the UK finally arrives, he seizes it, only to find that life in Hounslow is far from what he imagined.
The play was developed through the Vital Xposure Deaf, Disabled, and Neurodivergent Writing Programme, with early support from Riverside Studios, Barons Court Theatre, and Soho Theatre.
It received critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and is now touring the UK with support from Arts Council England NLPG.
Mr Mathur, who has appeared in the West End production of Life of Pi and worked with the Flute Theatre Acting Company, draws on his own experiences as a migrant artist to bring authenticity to the role.
Mr Willmott is known for his socially resonant storytelling and has directed the piece.
Dial 1 for UK is suitable for audiences aged 12 and above.
Tickets are priced at £11 and are available from www.newportlive.co.uk or by calling the box office on 01633 656757.
