Hi all, I’m planning a trip to Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria and Czechia and hoping to be able to drive around to all of them.
Does anyone know if there’s any issues with taking a rental car around to these different countries?
Were staring in Austria then heading to Hungary via Slovakia then back up through Slovakia to Poland and then over to Czechia and back to Austria to end .

Drive from Krakow to Zakopane is gonna take you like 6 hours during the day. Its the most traffic jamed road in entire country
Depending on where you rent the car you’d need to pay fee for covering multiple countries. Most rentals are happy to cover these countries, so no worries there.
Do not forget about e-vignettes.
Take notice that there is some minor differences in rules on road in those countries (ex “always on” lights, even during day) and different demands what you need to have in your car – ex high vis vest inside your cabin (!).
Some of those may not be where it should be in rental car. Or straightforward missing.
Outsider of that? Documents. Both yours and vehicle.
If you are American make sure to get international driving permit as Poland (not sure about other countries from the list) do not recognize American one.
When renting car make sure you have option to leave country, some default to „country only”.
Looks dope, just double check your rental agreement whether driving abroad is allowed.
Vintrica mobility is an app you can buy vignettes for all those countries
In Košice they’re gonna steal your car radio, otherwise OK.
In January of this year I did a roadtrip that included Czech republic, Poland, and Austria in a rental car. I used sixt and had to pay a bit extra for taking it to multiple countries.
If you collect the car from austria it should have an Austrian toll pass/vignette or whatever they are called. You’ll have to get one for the Czech republic, not sure about Slovakia and Hungary. The good news is for the Czech republic you can get short term passes unlike Switzerland that requires you to get one for a full 12 months (fuck the Swiss)
How long are you planning to do this? The driving alone could be 4 entire days. You’d need at least triple that amount to start enjoying anything.
Geeze I keep forgetting The Czech Republic is now Czechia.
We just got back from a six-week European road trip. We rented from Alamo and as long as we didn’t visit non-EU countries, there was no charge to cross borders. We needed vignettes for several countries. You can purchase these in roadside shops or rest areas near the border (watch for signs). When we would get to a city, we would book a hotel with on-site parking that was close to public transportation, so we wouldn’t need to deal with city traffic/parking. We are in our early 70’s and it was perfect for us not having to manage train schedules and dragging our luggage everywhere…plus we got to see so much more along the way.
