Moldova’s pro-European ruling party will nominate financier Alexandru Munteanu as the country’s next prime minister, the party’s leader Igor Grosu said on social media, according to Reuters.

Munteanu, an economist and founder of an investment firm, has not held political office before.

The move follows the resignation of Prime Minister Dorin Recean, who announced on Monday that he would step down and leave politics, Reuters reported.

President Maia Sandu’s Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) won a majority in parliament after the September 28 election. The party will now form a new government in the coming weeks.

The incoming administration will continue efforts to move Moldova, a former Soviet republic, closer to the European Union and further from Russia’s influence, Reuters said.
