Are They Manipulating Headlines? #funfact

Fun fact, there’s been an image going viral that shows two different covers of the same newspaper and claims that depending on the politics of where you live, you’d get a different headline and that’s how the media is controlling us. Except it’s not true. While these are the same papers from the same day, they were printed at different times and the headlines reflect the current news. Since the 1800s, the Wall Street Journal has used stars in the right hand corner of the front page to let people know when the paper was printed. So, two stars would be the morning edition and four stars would be the evening edition. The morning edition would highlight what was happening in the world and the evening edition would provide updates on those stories. This was essential to keeping people up to date on current events before cable news of the internet because the newspaper was the only way for people to get the news. In the case of the Trump covers, the morning edition on the left was published after Trump had held a press conference with the Mexican president where they discussed who would pay for the border wall. And a few hours later, Trump told a crowd in Arizona Mexico would 100% pay for the border wall. So, the evening edition on the right is just updating readers on the current events.

  1. Funny thing is that the headlines CAN change based on where you live, what media sources you consume, and political leanings. This is just a really bad example.

  2. I mean, also, if the newspaper really was selling you both versions, thats the opposite of the Newspaper being biased. That's being Non-Biased to the extreme. They have no opinion: or rather, they have both, and you pick the one you want.

The media isn't controlling you. You're controlling the media, by demanding a certain viewpoint, and voting with your wallet till you get it. Even subconsciously.

The Customer is the one that is biased: They're just selling you what you're willing to pay.

Its like blaming the guy at the bar for your own acholism.

  3. People will take “the media can be manipulative” to mean “everything we know is false and nothing is true.” They throw the baby out with the bath water.

  4. Some news agencies do publish separate right and left leaning papers.
I grew up in lancaster pa and there were two daily newspapers, the New Era (left) and the Intelligencer Journal (right).
They mostly had their own staff, but there was some overlap and they were owned by the same ultra-wealthy family.
It wasn't a secret or anything, you bought the one that catered to your views.

  5. “Enlightened” centrists trying their best to not have an opinion on anything ever that everyone else doesn’t already agree with

  6. No but buidling a wall to cease access of a country to yours and make them pay for it is such an American move.
