(For sources go here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_elections_in_West_Virginia you can click on individual elections and see how counties voted.) Just a little project I decided to do. I expected the rural vote to have died out in 2008 but it took until 2016 for that to happen. in 2020 Biden seems to have performed a little better in some rural areas. PLEASE do not argue about politics, I’m just a nerd who likes to look at political data.

  1. As always, it’s the election of a Black man to the Presidency.

  2. Every county has been red since 2012, although Biden was ~500 votes away from flipping Monongalia County in 2020

  3. Who knew, dumb inbred drug addicts are easily duped by racist conservatives.

  4. This is why the GOP work so hard on keeping people stupid and ignorant… WV own are blind to how far they have fallen.

  5. Don Blankenship shut down his coal mines, and then flooded the airwaves with messages blaming the democrats. The racism was also rampant.

In the Democratic Primary they voted for a convicted felon running from prison, over Obama. Officials tried tried prevent the state from embarrassing itself like that, by keeping the felon off the ballot. Don Blankenship turned around and used that against the officials the next time they were up for election.

  6. I think its the populist movement with the fires fanned by fox news before it was found out that fox news was, like the WWE, for entertainment only and was in fact all lies and propaganda. Now its too late

  7. they are blaming the wrong people and falling for shitty propaganda.  Republican trade policy and supply side economics pushed by Reagan, along with tax cuts for billionaires, hollowed out your jobs, not some gay couple getting married.

  8. Blue for West Virginia?

    What’s next…. red for California?

  9. Yeah that’s because they all died of black lung disease and republicans convinced their children that democrats ending coal is what destroyed their family

  10. One major issue that pushed WV to go red in 2000 was the Republican Party’s ability to pin the Democrats (and Gore specifically) to gun control.

  11. I love the idiots talking about West Virginia without ever living there.

  12. West Virginia is well on its way to voting itself out of existence. The Republican powers that be can get their vote reliably by saying the Democrats are coming after their guns or their God even though every other Republican platform issue is designed to take these people and push them further under the poverty line.

I don’t have it in me anymore to care about people who are too ignorant to look out for themselves.

  13. Coincidentally, WV is ranked 50th in the nation for percentage of population with a bachelor’s degree or higher.

  14. How’s that going for ya, WV? Do you have “beautiful clean coal” yet? 🤤

  15. Questions for West Virginia residents: has your state gotten better since you started voting red?

  16. Looks more like a WV map of the middle class slipping into poverty to me. Not even going to pretend like it didn’t get worse.

  17. Its worth noting that there has been a mass exodus out of the Midwest. Many states like WV, Iowa, OH etc have all switched red after many democrats moved out to go to CA or other states with more opportunities. This is the end result. States with nothing going for them all festering in squalor

  18. Regarding beautiful data: using a color scale that changes based on being above/below 50% could be helpful

  19. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is the definition of something

  20. Didn’t see this in the top few comments, but it belongs there – Byrd died in 2010. It was effectively an off switch for voting D in WV
