Malta football’s Dawson Hammond will be headed to Missoula in the fall after the Mustangs’ senior standout announced via social media on Sunday that he has verbally committed to play for the Montana Grizzlies.

Hammond will be a preferred walk on for the Grizzlies and is being recruited as an athlete with his specific position for Montana yet to be decided. He has been a three-year starter on both sides of the ball for Malta while also returning kicks and punts for the special teams units.

On offense so far this fall, the wide receiver has turned 27 receptions into 546 yards with nine touchdowns. At safety for the Malta defense, Hammond has been equally impactful with five interceptions already including a pair of pick-sixes. Last season Hammond was an all-state selection at wide receiver with 47 receptions for 1,016 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Besides football, Hammond also ecxels on the basketball court and the track for the Mustangs. This past spring he set a school-record of 11.19 seconds in the 100 meter dash

Hammond chose Montana over offers from Rocky Mountain College, Jamestown, Montana Western, Minot State, Carroll College, Dickinson State and Montana Tech.

But before college football arrives, Hammond will focus on his 7-0 Mustangs squad as they look to win their second straight class B state football title.
