A total of 67 undocumented migrants have been rescued from a vessel south of Gavdos, Greece’s southernmost island.

The operation was conducted by a vessel belonging to Frontex, the European Union’s border agency.

The migrants were transported to the port of Gavdos, where they received first aid and underwent identification procedures.

No further details have been released at this time.

Greece was at the forefront of the 2015-2016 migration crisis, when more than a million people fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and Africa crossed into Europe.

Although migrant flows later subsided, Greece has recently tightened its migration policies amid a resurgence of arrivals from Libya via the islands of Crete and Gavdos.
