  1. The article lists China and the Tory underinvestment in the country which has limited prospects for people as the problems. For those who don’t want to click

  2. More than halfway through the article:

    > But many experts blame a specifically British issue: the impact of years of austerity imposed by Conservative-led governments in the 2010s, which led to cuts in the number of police officers and their budgets. In 2017, the Met said it would stop investigating low-level crimes where it judged there was little prospect of catching the culprits, so it could prioritize tackling serious violence and sexual offenses.

  3. Short answer: because the Tories fucked the country

  4. Interesting article

The craziest quote is the one where the police thought it was just petty criminals – I mean 80,000+ phones snatched- surely the police knew there was a network set up to send them abroad and therefore was organised crime behind it

It’s like saying when those SUVs were all stolen and sent to Africa that it was just petty car thief’s behind it

  5. How do they get past the activation lock once it gets to China?

  6. My phone got stolen at Leeds festival back in August.

What’s funny is the ‘Find my’ popped up the other day and showed me that it’s in Shenzhen, China.

The exact same week I happen to be on holiday in Hong Kong which is the city next door over the border. It’s very tempting to go over and see what’s what, but of course too risky in fact.

  7. It pisses me off so much that it took them so long to figure this out. No inkling that there was an organized force behind it?

Also: ‘They mount sidewalks and swipe phones from people’s hands at speed, he said, while making themselves “unidentifiable” by wearing balaclavas and hoods. “How do you police that?” he asked.’

Yeah mate, that’s a tough one, criminals in balaclavas with getaway plans… probably impossible isn’t it? Yeah don’t worry, no one would blame you for giving up here. It’s pretty tricky.

Better stick to symbolically arresting pensioners holding signs.

  8. Have to go over halfway down the article before you get to the part about police cuts since 2010 resulting in the police not investigating low level crime.
