In Moldova, officials have officially confirmed plans to nominate businessman Alexandru Munteanu for the post of prime minister, a person who described himself as ‘an American of Moldovan origin living in Ukraine and the region for 20 years’.
The leader of the pro-government party Action and Solidarity (PAS) – Igor Grosu – announced these intentions in a Facebook post. He noted that PAS would wait for the Constitutional Court to approve the parliamentary mandates, and after the first session of Parliament and the formation of factions, it would put forward Munteanu’s candidacy for consideration.
“Moldova needs competent people with extensive experience in the economy who can lead the process of integration into the EU and support economic development. We thank Mr. Munteanu, a person with an impressive career, for agreeing to help the country at a time when it needs it most”
– Igor Grosu
In turn, the candidate himself confirmed that he is in talks with PAS and expressed gratitude for the trust.
“First, there must be validation of the election results by the Constitutional Court, the session of the new Parliament, and discussions with President Maia Sandu”
– Alexandru Munteanu
According to Ziarul de Gardă, Munteanu is currently 61 years old. He worked at the World Bank, is one of the founders of the American Chamber of Commerce in Moldova, and has led the Alliance Française in Chisinau for more than 30 years. He holds a university degree in physics, worked at the Institute of Applied Physics of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, and later at the Technical University of Moldova, where he also held the position of deputy dean of the international faculty.
The publication points to the résumé Munteanu compiled in 2018 when he applied for membership on the board of the American Chamber of Commerce in Kyiv – presenting not only his career but also the reasons why he believes he could be a candidate for such a post in Ukraine. In this document, written in English, he introduced himself as
“an American of Moldovan origin living in Ukraine and the region for 20 years”

The results of Moldova’s 2025 parliamentary elections show that after counting 100% of the protocols, the pro-government pro-European party PAS won with 50.20% of the votes. In second place was the opposition Patriotic Electoral Bloc with 24.17% of the votes. Also entering the parliament were: the Pro-European Party Bloc “Alternative” – 7.96%; “Our Party” of Renato Usatîi – 6.20%; the “Democracy at Home” Party – 5.62%.
On October 13 it became known that Dorin Recean refused the offer to again head Moldova’s government and plans to resign his parliamentary mandate.
Context of events and prospects for developing the political scene
The new political landscape highlights the growing role of experienced administrators and the need for coordination between pro-Western forces and regional interests during the formation of the government and the future strategy for EU integration.
Future steps, considering parliamentary dynamics and interactions with President Maia Sandu, will determine the trajectory of the political crisis and stability in the country.
