From 15th October 2025, the Latvia-Russia and the Latvia-Belarus border crossings at Grebņeva, Terehova and Pāternieki can only be crossed with prior registration in the Electronic Queue Reservation System (ERRS).

With the introduction of the new queue reservation system in Latvia, this procedure for crossing the eastern border is now in place in all three Baltic States. Registration of vehicles in the electronic queue for border crossing is available on the websites www.lvborder.lv and www.lvrobeza.lv.

Advance registration in the electronic queue for border crossing on the websites www.lvborder.lv and www.lvrobeza.lv began on 1 October this year, and to date, more than 3,450 reservations have already been made. Of these, 1,500 are for crossing at Terehova, more than 1,000 for crossing at Grebņeva, and slightly over 900 at Pāternieki.

The new procedure requires all motor vehicles crossing the eastern border of Latvia to be registered remotely through a specially developed e-service – the Electronic Queue Reservation System, similar to the systems already in place in Estonia and Lithuania.

Starting 15 October 2025, vehicles not registered in the Electronic Queue Reservation System will not be allowed to cross the eastern border of the Republic of Latvia. Border crossing in a “live” queue will no longer be available.

The official advice of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is that Latvian citizens and residents should not visit aggressor states Russia and Belarus at all – but it remains only advice, which thousands of people appear happy to ignore.

Transparent border crossings

Registration in the system allows the driver to select a specific time slot (1 hour) for entering the relevant border crossing point 30 days before the planned border crossing. Advance registration involves registering for a queue, joining the queue, and a simplified calculation based on the average service time per vehicle at the border crossing point. After the payment confirmation the system issues a queue number for crossing the border within the selected time slot. Once the reservation and payment have been confirmed, a confirmation email is sent containing the details provided and the selected time slot. The fee for reservation in the electronic queue is EUR 9.30 per vehicle.

Reservation can also be made before reaching the border crossing point by selecting the nearest available time slot offered by the system.
