London murders have fallen to 89 in the last 12 months. The lowest rate on record. Some positive news – hopefully this London is dangerous narrative can stop.

As a person from a country with 1.5M that has 500+ murders a year, this is absurdly low!
I did that math, thats like us having 20-25 murders a year.
We’ve had 20+ murders in a week dozens of times.

“London” by Peter Ackroyd does well to hammer home that historically London today is extremely safe compared to how it had always been and that risk of violent attack was a feature of London life for centuries, which is why we got our own police force before anyone else did. For example the Gordon Riots of 1780 where there was a mass breakout in prisons across London, that wouldn’t happen now. Not playing down the knife problem we have today, but my grandparents were bombed out of their London homes by a foreign country and parents remember the daily risk of racially aggravated assault by organised groups. Compared to them I have it easy.

I lived in a few places in the uk, London easily has felt the safest, both from a personal safety and general crime point of view. I never understood why everyone was always telling me how dangerous it is here, used to see fights in the street every week in Nottingham
I find this stats from the same page a lot more important. This was a huge problem a few years ago.

Naive to think the “London is dangerous” narratives are in any way good faith
The fall in murder is even more dramatic when you consider that London’s population has grown by about 30% since 2005.
We live in a much safer city than in the past.
Not all doom and gloom, plus we can thank modern treatment of previous fatal wounds. Certain crime is still trending higher, so can’t be complacent. Certainly a good rebuttal to all the racist American narratives.
