Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said he would stop blocking a new package of sanctions against Russia if the European Union resolves the crisis in the automotive industry and solves the problems with high energy prices.
He wrote about this on the social network X.
As Fico said, he had a long conversation with European Council President Antonio Costa, during which he expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that the Ukrainian issue is once again being viewed as a priority, rather than as “huge economic and political problems of the EU.”
The official stressed that he refuses to consider new restrictions until the EU issues are resolved. In particular, Fico added that energy prices make the European economy completely uncompetitive.
“I refuse to allow such serious issues to be ‘resolved’ in the EC’s conclusions in general phrases, while detailed decisions and positions are devoted to helping Ukraine and supporting the war,” the Slovak Prime Minister said in a statement.
It was previously reported that two European Union member states — Slovakia and Austria — are delaying the approval of the 19th package of sanctions against Russia.
By the way, the approval of the new, 19th package of sanctions by the European Union against Russia may be postponed – Slovakia insists that this issue be considered at the level of heads of state during the October EU summit.
