Orexi, a new Mediterranean-Californian restaurant, opened its doors today at the freshly renovated Courtyard by Marriott hotel in Little Italy.
The 23-story Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown Little Italy at 1646 Front St. has been undergoing an extensive renovation since early this year. The new restaurant is one of the revamp project’s finishing touches. Orexi is now in soft-opening mode and will hold its grand opening in mid-November.
Orexi is the Greek word for “appetite” or “desire.” The restaurant concept, conceived by Schulte Hospitality Group, is globally-inspired scratch-made dishes featuring locally sourced ingredients. The menu features house-made spreads, shared plates and handcrafted cocktails and mocktails. Orexi is open for breakfast and dinner service, but not lunch.
Orexi’s breakfast service hours are 6:30 to 11 a.m. The morning menu includes traditional American breakfast items as well as global specialties like shakshuka, a Med egg bowl with feta and tahini vinaigrette and a Mediterranean breakfast plate.
Dinner service, beginning at 4 p.m., will include mezze-style shared appetizer plates including hummus, a baba ganoush-style dip with pita bread and falafel bites.
Some of the specialty entrées are are Pacific salmon with green chickpeas, pine nuts and caper dill sauce, and a beef kofte slider plate with cumin-spiced meatballs, tomato sauce and feta, burrata Mediterránea with heirloom cherry tomatoes, marinated artichoke hearts, Kalamata olives and roasted red peppers.
There’s also a tabouleh and beet salad, a Mediterranean chopped salad, a chicken shawarma sandwich and a falafel bowl.
Orexi has six signature cocktails, including the Riviera, made with strawberry-infused Aperol, Fever Tree Mediterranean Tonic and Zardetto prosecco, and the Après Sea, featuring Grey Whale Gin, Yellow Chartreus, lemon honey and orange bitters. There are also four digestif-style “nightcap” drinks made with brandy, chai tea, coffee liqueur and Amontillado sherry. The wine selection includes reds from California, whites from California, France and New Zealand and sparkling wines from Italy and France.
“We created Orexi to be more than just a restaurant; it’s an experience rooted in flavor and hospitality,” said Stephan Bogardus, regional vice president of food and beverage operations at Schulte Hospitality Group, in a statement.
