    But beyond this seemingly narrow pilot lies a more sweeping and controversial ambition: the Government intends to introduce a mandatory digital identity scheme ([dubbed the “BritCard”](https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/britcard-digital-id-facing-major-backlash-from-labour-3942182?srsltid=AfmBOoo4PCDmmGybT04WINmWn1GzRvYE8T6VzB6jK5KdhEwyTQJlgrN3&ico=in-line_link)) that would require all workers to hold a government-approved digital ID to prove their right to work.

    The Government says the initial change will make age verification faster and safer, cutting the need to carry passports or driving licences on nights out. But critics warn that the pilot is a trojan horse for a system that could normalise invasive identity checks across many areas of life.

    I find my wrinkles mean I’m never asked to produce ID, and I don’t expect that to change.

    This is an addition to the types of ID that retailers and bars can ask for. I don’t think there was a need for more types

  14. Fucking hell, takes them years and years to do anything that might remotely improve things for people. But something that nobody* wants they can go from announcement to a working system within 3 months? Didn’t it take longer to get track and trace working? Suspect there will be some nice big brown envelopes containing that £20Bn budget black hole money going to these tech companies.

    The article says that digital IDs *could* be used to buy alcohol, but nowhere does it say *must*. This is being proposed as an alternative to, but not a replacement for, physical photo ID.

  43. Things like this make me actually feel like a paranoid schizophrenic because it’s so obviously a shit idea that will be unpopular with most people. So why would someone capable of actually becoming pm in the first place ever take an action like this?

    He genuinely feels like a bought and sold tool used to make labour look stupid and other alternatives, by comparison, look smart. Except SOMEHOW the alternative is even worse.

    Which is just.. a waking nightmare? There is literally no viable institution available to the UK populace, literally every single one is owned by the elite. What could we possibly do to fight back against this kind of all-pervasive evil? More and more i begin to believe it’s not possible, that they already won. And I get to look at my fellow man stringing up flags and blaming all their problems on brown people with absolutely nothing, no power, crossing an ocean on a fucking dinghy. Maybe we deserve the collapse we are bringing upon ourselves
