In other words: don’t spend more but spend better. A European Army would be both stronger and cheaper. It’s a no-brainer.
And the sovereignty argument doesn’t hold water either, because currently Europeans are fully dependent on Washington. That’s not sovereignty.
Ofc we need a European army. With brigades of different countries maybe but 1 army.
This could make one optimistic but then you read about FCAS and you realize that if three European countries can’t even agree on building a fighter jet together there is no way a European military will be a reality anytime soon.
The survey was on 1001 people.
And the real conclusion is :
67% of French people say **they support the principle of a common security and defense policy within the European Union**, i.e., the sharing of human and material resources, technologies, and military investments between European Union countries, including 51% who are somewhat in favor and 16% who are very much in favor. Conversely, 32% are opposed, including 23% who are somewhat opposed and 9% who are very opposed.
“Should there be European Army?” is wholy different from “Should there be army of the European Union ? ”
and that is wholy entirely different from “Should the Army of France be part and under the command of European union Army.”
And who takes military decisions then?
Add follow up question. EU army but under French command 😉
At least someone had a lot of fun coming up with the color scheme
Poland is fighting the EU in a curve, cool
Everyone in Europe supports the idea of a European army, but nobody wants to join or spend money on it.
Won’t happen unless EU exclude all inconsonant members and transfer control of the entire army to one country.
Under the French command? 😂
No, thanks. That’s where the idea ends.
They should do 2 follow up questions:
Would you be willing to pay higher taxes for said army?
And
Would you serve in said army or send your children to serve?
I bet they do. Now tell them they wouldn’t be in operational command of it, and that in order to be effective sometimes this combined force would have to operate in a way not conducive to French strategic interests, and see what happens to the number then.
Yes if eu was federation and not under ursula
France supports the creation of a European Army so that they can be in charge.
Anyone who wants an european Army should consider this:
What about Veto rights?
What about the Bad Relations between some european countries?
Who should and could be time Commander in Chief?
Are you, as a german for example, willing to shoot morokkans because the french have different objektives?
What about the different doctrines in each Military?
For example German soldiers have to disobey their Commander If the commands are against the law and each soldier is personally responsible for His actions.
Feance is very Europeist, buy only if they are the bosses.
Who decides when and where to use it?
what would be the downsides of this?
I think that if is a great idea but I would have thought that France would be more against it – great for them
We have one.
We don’t need a European army, we need armies in Europe to actually start standing up to Russia
At this very moment we could be shooting down Russian drones over Ukraine and Russian jets the moment they violate our airspace then warning Russia if it dares retaliate we have nukes too
Now ask who should be in charge and what systems they should use and nobody agrees anymore.
💯👍
This is a classic thing when everybody agress in principle but when it comes to implenentation it always falls apart. In order for the army to be effective some country will have to be in charge and no nation will accept to have its army commanded by foreign government. Only way for something like an european army to come to existence is either some nation subjugates others and forces its implementation or we will need outside threat of massive proportions and there is currently no such thing.
Maybe take on step at a time lmao, we can’t even agree on a unified foreign policy.
Did they ask if people wanted a European army or an EU army?
Should have one, but no one wants to pay for it.
It depends on it’s remit. As a first response unit for any attack in Europe then yes. But if it was used outside of Europe or attack first then no
Yes, with weapons made here and with Ukraine in it.
It might look goos on paper but as long as we have Germany, Italy and France in the EU it wont work. Good luck having them agree.
I wonder how this will work.
It’s a big decision, but it can only work if everyone’s on the same page.
I think to create an European army in itself is the least difficult part.
Agreements can be made about how many personel is provided by which country. What will be many times more difficult is to convince said countries to give up their independence on choice of procurement of equipment because a unified army means also standardization of equipment across all countries in the EU. Which Will limit the freedom of choice. Every country will want to give priority to its national production because that equipment will meet 100%of their requirements. Also what they will do is want or try to get contracts for procurements, manufactured in their factories, because there is still something called the national economy (jobs and lucrative contracts as example ).
So as much as I’d like to see it happen, as long as money rules the world, probably not going to happen…
That being said, I could be wrong
Come on, any conversation about a form of supernational army is a nonstarter, isn’t it? The mere idea of suppliyng soldiers to some entity without the direct approval of your own government – I can’t see that happening. An alliance like NATO is the closest we get to a binding military effort, I think.
I am a firm believer in NO. It would be a mess, and we don’t need to give a single entity total control over the European army.
It only makes sense really, Europe as a whole works because a lot of smaller countries work together to become one strong entity, but the main issue is always bureaucracy and decision making.
Militarily most nations are too small to be relevant as well, ideally different nations would specialize in different categories to a piece of a big puzzle.
Yes, under french command (I’m french)
Vive la France 🇫🇷
And Who should command It?
For what purpose
From the perspective of Greece the creation of a European Army is essential for its sovereignty. See also this interesting video about that: How the European Army Can Strengthen Greece’s Defence Against Turkey https://youtu.be/VvQ81Upg3Lk
And it should be called “The Great Army”.
It would be nice to have ALL the things necessary to have a single army.
But we dont’t have them, and we sre not likely to have them for some time (if ever…).
So… what we should do in the mean time is a lot lore exercises of coordination as allies for likely scenarios, either here or abroad. And I mean really go for it, simulate all kinds of disagreements etc.

Further European integration would add €3 trillion in value every year according to a major study. That’s four times the entire US defence budget.

That’s quite different from supporting a european army.
