This coming Tuesday will be the third time that the Montclair Township Council has refused to add a Resolution in Support of the Immigrant Trust Act (ITA) to the agenda for a vote. According to the ACLU, the Immigrant Trust Act (S3672/A4987) is critical for “New Jerseyans to live their lives without fear that routine interactions with state and local government could lead to permanent separation from their loved ones through immigration detention and deportation”.
Eighteen townships and two counties (Essex and Hudson) have passed resolutions in support of the ITA to send the message to the NJ State Legislature that the people of NJ want the ITA to become law. Among the townships that have passed this resolution are Bloomfield, Maplewood, Paterson, Edison, Newark and Jersey City.
We demand the Montclair Council add this to the agenda for discussion and a vote. This is the time of courage; this is the time to step up and side with the most vulnerable – with our neighbors who are part of the social fabric of Montclair.
We invite our residents of Montclair to come to the Township Council meeting on Tuesday, October 21st to voice their opinion on a resolution in support of the Immigrant Trust Act. We also urge all Montclairians to write to their councilors and make their voices heard.
