The Lužánky stadium may finally see a revival. City councillors unanimously adopted a resolution supporting the construction of a new arena at the historic site. The investment is being promoted by the new owner of Zbrojovka, Vojtěch Kačena, who has declared his intention to finance the entire project from his own funds.
Fans at city hall
Around twenty Zbrojovka supporters attended the Brno City Council meeting. Wearing club shirts and scarves, they came to demand support for the idea of rebuilding the stadium at Lužánky. Speaking on behalf of the fans, Martin Štefka reminded councillors of the declarations made by the club’s new owner.
But before this transformation fully takes shape, a lot of time will pass. Beyond sport itself, fans now exist in a world of entertainment where long waiting times simply don’t fit in – and that applies to Hungary as well. What matters there is speed, availability and freedom of choice. That’s exactly why platforms like https://mightytips.bet/fogadoirodak/ are gaining popularity, offering users the chance to choose the best platform for themselves along with attractive welcome bonuses.
The new owner of Zbrojovka, Vojtěch Kačena, has announced his goals for the club. He said he wants to buy the land at market value and then build a 30,000-seat stadium there, stating that he intends to cover all costs from his own money and doesn’t want a single crown of public funds, said Štefka.
He stressed that this was a unique opportunity to end the years-long deadlock. It would be a chance to resolve the Gordian knot that I can call the Za Lužánkami stadium. And the only person who holds the sword to cut it is Mr. Kačena, who could also solve the property issues with Mr. Procházka, he added.
Ownership and legal disputes
The Lužánky area has long been the subject of disputes. The city could not fully manage the site due to a conflict with businessman Libor Procházka, who owns part of the land. A lawsuit has been ongoing since 2019, blocking earlier stadium plans.
For this reason, Brno authorities in recent years considered other sites, including one near the exhibition centre, where even the demolition of the velodrome had been planned. Now, however, the situation has changed, with a private investor ready to carry out the project independently at the historic location.
Unanimous decision by councillors
Following the fans’ speeches and a discussion, councillors from all parties – both coalition and opposition – adopted the resolution. The document states that the Brno City Council agrees to the construction of a stadium in the Lužánky area, provided it is legally and technically possible.
We very much value the fact that a private investor is coming to Brno and is willing to invest in sports infrastructure, particularly a stadium, said Mayor Markéta Vaňková (ODS). She added that the money the city had planned to allocate for this project could instead be directed to other investments.
Deputy Mayor René Černý (ANO) stated: If there are no insurmountable obstacles, we are ready to try to remove everything possible so that the stadium will be built at Lužánky.
Representatives of other parties – from KDU-ČSL to TOP 09, the Greens and the Pirates – expressed similar views. Environment Minister Petr Hladík stressed that concrete steps and a feasibility study are necessary, pointing to a unique opportunity for the city.
Genius loci and importance for fans
The Lužánky location carries special meaning for Brno residents. It was there that Zbrojovka won its only league title in 1978. The last league match was played at the stadium in 2001, after which it fell into ruin. Yet it remains a symbol – in 1996, the Czech league attendance record was set there (over 44,000 spectators), and in 2015 a farewell match for Petr Švancara drew 35,000 fans.
The best location for the stadium is at Lužánky. Other sites considered by Brno were chosen out of necessity, Štefka emphasised.
What’s next?
Although the councillors’ decision opens a new chapter, it does not solve all problems. City authorities announced the creation of a working group of experts to analyse the legal and technical aspects of the project. Changes to the zoning plan were also mentioned as necessary.
Councillor Petr Bořecký (ANO) reminded that the previous stadium design by architect Petr Hrůša is now outdated and does not meet current requirements. This means that new studies and concepts will be required.
