  1. *How sickening it must be to sit through that evidence for the family and friends of the victims that died.*

Counsel for bereaved husband and father Ryan Smyth was questioning crash scene investigator Damien Coll when the phone records were produced.

He put it to Mr Coll that at 16.45pm and 45 seconds, eight to nine seconds before impact, Mr Wilkinson’s phone accessed Instagram, asking whether that would have impacted the driver’s ability to avoid collision.

“Yes,” Mr Coll responded, later adding: “Concentration can be taken away from the normal driving task, which can result in not perceiving a hazard ahead.”

Mr Wilkinson denied use of his phone.

Audio taken from a cow shed across the road from the scene of the accident was played in court.

In the audio, a vehicle can be heard travelling along Whitepark Road, followed by what was said by Mr Smyth’s counsel to be “a high-pitched scream from a woman’s voice” from Mrs Smyth immediately before impact.

  2. Clearly a horrific incident, and no excuse for scrolling Instagram while driving a tractor- But also a heartbreaking reminder that you shouldn’t be driving a quad bike with a 5 and 3yr old.

  3. This behaviour is so rampant now, every time I’m on the M50 I’ll see stupid cunts with the head down scrolling on their phones doing 100mph. It absolutely boils my blood. There should be a complete zero tolerance policy to phone use while driving, if you’re caught on your phone it should be an automatic 3 month driving ban at *least*, no exceptions.

RIP to that woman and her poor child.

  4. We need this kind of information for any accident and anyone using their phone while driving should facing serious consequences and any doing it resulting in people dying should be locked up for a long long time.

This behavior is rampant I see people every day on their phone, the amount of lads in tractors on back roads it’s an epidemic and shit is only going to get worse

  5. I cycled past a woman in a Beamer jeep in Rathmines this evening with a period drama, something like Downton Abbey, playing on her phone, which was leaning against the middle of the dash. She signalled that she was just listening, not looking.

    Listening my arse.

  6. If your so addicted to social media that you would risk death just to scroll on it please seek help before you kill somebody. Fucking morons.

  7. If caught on the phone the vehicle should be confiscated for 3 months first offence, 6 months second and turned into a cube third time.

Also the max speed allowable in the country is 120kph. No car sold in the country should be able to travel faster than this.

  8. Fucking wankers and their damn phones, animals with a rotten brain. Bustards.

  9. Talking about distraction. Irony of mobile phone use being bad (which it is) yet many new cars have big digital display screens mounted on the dash with millions of apps and distractions and no manufacturers even thought they might be a bad idea for road safety. Scroll on mobile? No. Scroll on identical interface on dash board? No problem

  10. Round Co Tipp it’s very unusual to encounter a huge tractor who’s driver isn’t on the phone. Just an observation.

  11. ah just this morning on my commute I saw someone actively scrolling tiktok on their phone with their phone mounted on the dashboard cradle. shame I couldnt take a video as I was driving myself but I was fuming. absolute shitshow to be so attached/addicted. I swear i am getting a second/third dashcam that will point at cars beside me at some point

rang the gards and they final just took the reg off me.

  12. I live in rural ireland. This is what I’ve seen: 90% of tractors are driven by young males, 95% of them are on their phone while driving. It’s actually shocking how fast they drive.
