Every day, Svitlana Komar visits the Alley of Glory in Lypovets to touch the portrait of her son – fallen soldier Dmytro Muzyka. He was killed in July 2024 in Donetsk region while defending Ukraine as part of the 59th Assault Brigade named after Yakiv Handziuk. He was 31 years old.
Dmytro had first gone to the front in 2017, later left the military, but after the full-scale invasion returned to serve again. On his birthday, June 30, he spent the day with his wife Maryna in Novohrodivka, Donetsk region. The next morning, during a combat mission, he was killed by a mine explosion.
“He said he would come back in the morning and eat cherry dumplings I made for him. Then he texted that he was heading to work and loved me. That was his last message,” Maryna shared.
For the family, this was not the first tragedy. Earlier, in 2022, Svitlana’s future son-in-law, Dmytro Zozulia, was also killed in action. He fought in Mykolaiv region, in the village of Ternovi Pody, and had been her son’s comrade-in-arms.
“My son and my son-in-law were always together. My son introduced my daughter to Dmytro. He was a wonderful person.”
Despite her grief, Svitlana’s daughter, 25-year-old Antonina Sadovenko, chose to carry on the legacy of her brother and fiancé. She signed a contract with the National Guard of Ukraine and now serves in the 13th Operational Brigade “Khartia.”
Svitlana admits it is hard to accept her daughter’s decision but says she is proud of her courage.
