Donald Trump arrives in Israel as hostages return • FRANCE 24 English
Uh well, Shelley, according to footage released by Netanyahu’s office, uh Donald Trump reportedly said to uh Netanyahu and the president, Isaac Herzog as he landed, it’s a great day, maybe your best day. So, we’re seeing live pictures there of Donald Trump arriving at the Knesset. Uh let’s take a listen. Good. Yes, please. Excuse me, Mr. President. [Music] Okay. Okay. Still still. Let’s start with one here. Let’s look here first. Then here. This one. Start with one here. And please here first. Then here. Let’s try again. And please here. Let’s try again. Now here you sir. Amen to that. We’ll be here. Yes, sir. Mr. President, if you’re just joining us, we’re watching live pictures of US President Donald Trump arriving at the Israeli Kesset there. Uh he’s written in in in that book. You can see uh this is a great and beautiful day, a new beginning. Uh the president obviously hailing uh this day because it is his 20point plan uh for peace in Gaza that has kind of served as the basis of this initial ceasefire uh that provide the basis for this initial hostage release and prisoner swap and an end to the fighting in Gaza. Of course uh Shirley Sitbon is with me to talk about this. Shirley is this uh symbolic clearly and and you see this this marker pretty unusual. I don’t know if it’s Donald Trump who chose such a large marker or if he was given one, but yes, definitely stands out. Yes, a historic day. This war ongoing war for 2 years perhaps is coming to an end. And you must admit, I mean, everyone says that yes, the fact that Donald Trump has his methods, his pressure, he was able to force all sides at least to this ceasefire, which is already a a beginning, but trying to continue and use his leverage to push them both uh into ending this war. And even he he sees this even further because he he sees peace. Uh he says it’s been centuries. So he he goes much further. But at least if the ceasefire continues, it would already be a historic day. If uh if the violence stops, the the death the deaths stop and and the hostages have been returned, the living ones, if the dead ones are returned as well. It’s a historic day anyway. the Palestinian detainees being released, some of them uh security uh prisoners which are deemed as extremely dangerous by the Israelis, but most of them Palestinians, Gazins who’ve been arrested since October 7, who can return um to the Palestinian territory, although their homes are probably uh destroyed since most of the buildings in the Gaza Strip have been destroyed in this uh in this war. We’re seeing Donald Trump uh continuing uh his visit of the Kness at the Israeli Parliament where he’ll pronounce a historic speech which we will listen to. Certainly he was welcomed uh very warmly as we saw there and and and as we see now uh and by Israelis I think he’s he’s he’s seen as the person who could get this peace deal over the line. Is it fair to say? Well, at least you know it’s it’s a beginning. I don’t know how optimistic Israelis are overall. They I think a majority says that he’s the the one who can bring the end to this war which is which would already be uh a miracle for many people who felt trapped uh in this in this horrible ongoing war since October 7 and ongoing uh nightmare. Uh so at least to this uh war uh he’s the one who has the tools to bring this to an end. Um not just by forcing both sides uh to to accept a ceasefire but also by showing them the advantages for them what this could bring them uh gives them a way out of this terrible war without being um without losing without admitting they they’ve lost. Uh because every time, you know, when they had talks, Israel and Hamas, each one of them dropped out believing that the deal wasn’t good enough for them. Uh so every time it collapsed. Well, Donald Trump brings them something. Brings the Palestinians something, brings the Israelis something. Um if this brings about, you know, not just the end of violence, but some kind of uh hope of peace uh uh sometime ahead, well, this is already an an amazing achievement for Israelis and Palestinians alike. Although this is just the beginning. You see across Israel there are various banners hailing uh Donald Trump as Israel’s greatest u friend uh a hero uh using various phrases. His picture is in many on many posters across the country um and the also his administration saying this can be even asking them to go further. There are some posters saying well you should continue this you know because basically without saying it our government is not doing it. So, can you actually bring about normalization with other countries uh in the region? Could you bring us a future? Could you bring us hope? And yes, we we’ve heard really speeches in recent days uh which have uh from the Americans which have brought Israelis more hope than what they’ve been hearing on the Israeli side. Um so yes that’s that’s the situation and the Israelis yes finding uh a solution and of course the first amongst them uh the families of the hostages and also all the people who have uh who have been fighting on the ground many Israeli soldiers who uh who wanted also this war to end who felt that it’s it was over it it was leading um you know it it has met most of its objectives and it didn’t really have any um goals and many people were saying that the Israeli prime minister um his uh his plan to just defeat and kill until the last Hamas fighter was just not achievable because Hamas can always recruit new people. So, it’s a never- ending war.
President Donald Trump arrived in Israel on Monday to celebrate the U.S.-brokered ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas, an agreement that he declared had effectively ended the war and opened the door to building a durable peace in the Middle East. The US leader was whisked off to the Knesset, where he’s scheduled to speak to Israeli lawmakers. After arriving, he signed the guest book. FRANCE 24’s Shirli Sitbon has the analysis.
