A colleague of mine is thinking of making the move across the border to be closer to his partners family. He's currently working in the Republic's civil service and spoke about possibly making the jump to the civil service in Belfast.

I looked around online for salary information for the grades in both and the possible range.
All figures are in pounds. Does this look in any way accurate?

My colleague is an AP on 70k plus, does the same job pay 49k in the NICS?

Would appreciate any comments if I've missed something.

  1. You’re skipping jobs here in fairness. Where is EO1 and SO?

  2. Good luck getting a job in the civil service here.

I spent months doing the fast stream. Got offered a place with no start date or dept, a year later they pulled the job because I didn’t accept my post.

I emailed them like twice a month for 6 months asking for my Start date and was told I’d hear in due course.

  3. As above, NI pay scales aren’t accurate.

I’m not sure the grades are comparable with ROI either.

Assistant Secretary could be compared to Grade 3 in NICS rather than Grade 6, which is an Assistant Director role.

EO1 and SO roles missing too

  4. Your friend could also consider the UK Civil Service, I think the salaries are a bit higher and there may be more job options. There’s an office in Belfast.

  5. He could just commute? I’ve heard of people doing big commutes or actually staying in roi a few days a week for the salary. It is not a great salary up here unless you are more senior.
