One year ago, I was in Pennsylvania listening to Ukrainian Americans explain how some members of their community were backing [Donald Trump](https://inews.co.uk/topic/donald-trump?srsltid=AfmBOop3MZgJZ9wSAaNPEw9YBg20drHjxeR1XohJOzXXzhDyOHeJnT4B&ico=in-line_link) in the election on the basis that he was most likely to help Ukraine turn the tide in its war with Russia.

    Their argument was simple: Trump, they said, was so vain and unpredictable that he would grow frustrated eventually with the [intransigence](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/reasons-why-putin-never-agree-end-war-ukraine-3703879?srsltid=AfmBOoo_WG8FLdUMkR-Wj1l5aHhxw2KInsPEL1wE-whYigvBpQvQJJgm&ico=in-line_link) of [Vladimir Putin](https://inews.co.uk/topic/vladimir-putin?ico=in-line_link) – and then, taking it as a personal affront, drastically ratchet up the supply of weapons to Kyiv.

    It was a theory I heard repeatedly on the right: that Trump could be the man to bring this cruel conflict to an end by bludgeoning through diplomatic roadblocks. This twisted logic was echoed here by former Tory prime minister [Boris Johnson](https://inews.co.uk/topic/boris-johnson?srsltid=AfmBOoo-QccnAzL9ZOi-2AMMLBar-TfBIJn3PKHrLL5oESjq07ShyWO9&ico=in-line_link).

    Instead we watched with horror as Trump – restored to the presidency – [humiliated President Volodymyr Zelensky](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/three-astonishing-things-trump-said-to-zelensky-in-white-house-shouting-match-3560887?srsltid=AfmBOopnnBtoCWpXosde9_XNwxYDo0oCk1r5gXtdHlagSfFjxKNvINM8&ico=in-line_link) in the White House, spewed out Kremlin propaganda, severed support for Kyiv, and rolled out the red carpet for Putin during that [badly judged Alaska summit](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/trump-putin-alaska-ukraine-meeting-who-won-3863728?srsltid=AfmBOopAt8UiyXnBcISIu8PiviLMvQiK36HrjR_LX-rme0kaAdF3TaWa&ico=in-line_link).

    Russia’s leader reportedly concluded from the Anchorage meeting that however hard his armed forces struck Ukraine, Trump was unlikely to do very much to assist Kyiv’s military or stiffen their air defences.

    So the Kremlin carefully strokes [Trump’s ego](https://inews.co.uk/opinion/trumps-time-cover-reveals-biggest-fear-3980884?ico=in-line_link) – even sympathising over his [failure to win the Nobel Peace Prize](https://inews.co.uk/news/nobel-peace-prize-2025-winner-donald-trump-3965751?srsltid=AfmBOopBwjGfpoV-EeXqI7f7wb5SM8Y7kypkKRkQzC1PqRoxebc6OwSY&ico=in-line_link) last week – to the American President’s clear delight. Then it carries on with its murderous barrage of atrocities and war crimes in Ukraine.

    Trump, the elected leader of a democratic superpower who claims to be making his country great again, is left looking weak – a patsy in thrall to the fascistic dictator who is waging war on our liberal values with the aid of his autocratic allies.

  9. The fact Trump has agreed to meet in Hungary shows how naive and stupid he is.
    Russia (and Putin) know exactly how to play Trump.
    The corrupt Russian puppet Orban will help no end to massage Trumps narcissistic ego.
    Orban, no doubt, will be told what to do and what to say.
    Trump has shown many times he behaves like a weak smitten teachers pet when dealing with Putin.
    Trump will backstab Ukraine and agree to Putins demads in order to stop yet another (9th) war and with the help of Putin, win his coveted Nobel Peace prize.

  11. Tomahawks for Ukraine has always felt like bullshit again from Trump. How would they be launched by Ukraine? Typically they’re fired from ship or sub, not to many of those in Ukraine.
