Return to what exactly, bidding against half the world just to try and own a home in the same region your parents and grandparents lived in?
I thought the Aussies were telling them to fuck off home from the headline.
The Irish in Australian will scorn this. They know what it’s like back home. If we want them back we need to offer guaranteed housing and generous employment conditions (and even then they’re probably better off where they are). The problem is we’ve waited till there is literally no spare capacity in the system to be able to do anything like that.
Also: ‘You built Sydney’. That’s going to rub some people up the wrong way. It comes very close to the divisive rhetoric in the UK claiming that the Windrush generation rebuilt Britain after the war.
Come home and live in your parents house
Yeah come home, no where to live, your car/van insurance will be extortionate as you’ve had no policy for over 2 years, everything is twice as expensive as when you left and petty crime and drugs are out of control.
Irish government: We don’t have any houses, could you please come back and build them please?
Irish builders in oz: Where will I live while I build the houses?
Irish Government: ….awe I see what we’ve done…..please? GAA?
come home and build homes *that you will never be able to afford on a wage that means you’ll never be able to start a family*
Come home (and live with your parents because there is nowhere else to live)
It looks so similar to a Paddy Power Ad campaign
This is the “how about another mass” stage of the FFG housing plan.
lol, everyone complaining about them coming home to live with their parents.
Yet, we need them to help build the homes so people aren’t stuck living with their parents.
If I was living in Oz, I’d be more concerned about leaving behind the quality of life over there.
Been getting this same ad in Canada all week
‘Oh yeah, never thought of that’.
This makes me angry tbh. There are plenty who want to live in Ireland but feasibly can’t. And this poster is a kick in the teeth to those people, and to all of us. It’s actually insulting. If I saw this my first thought would be ‘fuck off’.
I wonder how much this stupid campaign cost.
As if anyone is going to see this and say “Well, it had it occurred to me till now, but you have a point!”
This is outrageous tbh
Our generation is leaving because FF and FG fucked up our opportunity to have a good life here.
Now instead of fixing any of the things they fucked, they are wasting money on adverts abroad trying to guilt and gaslight emigrants into returning back to be a part of their shitty system…
How pathetic. Pay them more.
More tax payer money being pissed down the drain
I can’t speak for every trade out there but for electricians emigrating to Australia it’s purely for the good weather and relaxed lifestyle as far as I’m concerned. The money is roughly the same as in Ireland and our certs don’t transfer out there so most of them aren’t even working as electricians but as sparks mates and labourers earning less than they would here
And live where exactly
Makes sense this is Simon Harris’ brain child. Wouldn’t expect anything less from a college drop out
Why would anyone come and work in a country where rent would eat up majority of their wages and they aren’t on enough to afford a mortgage 😅
beside, they couldn’t afford a home… back home…
Come home to what exactly? Most of them left because it was shite, that hasn’t changed.
Come home quickly winter is on the way
Mother of God. Im a construction employer. Instead of enabling our young to prolong kidulthood by doing a poxy BA that’ll do them no good, get them into apprenticeships. When a 17 year old starts with us, by 22 they’re earning 45k. By 25 50k. gor a flat week ie 39hrs. After that, any amount. Government, concentrate on supporting and enabling our school leavers to gather decent jobs.
Come home, to your parents box room and a 52% tax rate
There are so many shit comments on this from people who clearly have never left Ireland for more than a few years.
These people keep saying how Ireland is a shit hole etc but i can get more here (childrens allowance etc) cheaper health insurance than I ever got in the US.
I’m coming from a US perspective and lived there for a long time. House prices in the US (NY) are crazy. They are high as feck here too but don’t forget a second that Ireland is a shit hole. It’s not.
Oh Danny boooy…
The sites, the sites are calling.
They did this in UK during Celtic Tiger came back to Ireland for the biggest recession the country ever seen .with retail and construction having huge job losses
To be charitable, the only, the *only* way this would work is if they can house the people working in construction or give them preferential or first offer when the houses are built. Otherwise why would anyone bother?
> Our generation is leaving because FF and FG fucked up our opportunity to have a good life here.
The actual statistics say otherwise.
Are you here?
The Australians come over here with fancy ads like that trying to recruit doctors, except they include offers like better conditions than we get here, assistance with relocation, that weird tax efficient bill paying thing, and lots of stuff about weather and lifestyle.
What are these ads actually offering trades to come home? Homelessness and misery in the damp?
The entire government are clueless, incompetent, and useless. This campaign however is intentionally dense. They know that nobody working in Australia will return here to live in their parents box room for lower wages to build a house for people brought into their own country while they were shipped out themselves. The aim of the government with this campaign is so they can say they’re doing something while doing nothing at all, and simultaneously point at this as an aim to bring Irish people home. As with all government policy it is a waste of time, money, and achieves nothing.
I think the next generation of Irish folks will have to live in Prefabs ..
Very small ones with a corrugated tin roof.
Just to be called young inexperienced drivers by insurance companies and rode dry 😂
Dear skilled trades people, we don’t know what we’re doing, please come and fix it -Irish government
“Come back and enjoy our exclusive deals, like”
Starting to sound like a Supervalu ad haha
Personally, I think we should give returning Irish citizens with in demand construction experience some kind of declining rebate on income tax for 5 years.
‘You built Sydney’ – that won’t annoy your typical Aussie at all 😂
Don’t fall for it, lads, like the health workers who got fcuked over when they returned.
Earn less money and live with your parents. Sure why not?
So are they asking them to *come home* to be part of like a new state owned construction company…..or come and work to build american investment portfolios.
They done it in Toronto too. We were surplus to requirements 10 to 15 years ago and it’s still the same vile pigs in government.
This is a slap in the face for people that left the country. As if it’s easy just to uproot your life and leave everything behind.
It’s things like this that make sure I’ll never go back.
That couldn’t possibly have been less exciting.
“You built Sydney. Now come and build back home”
Yeah, that’ll work…
Who needs English lords we have Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.
Lots of comments laughing at this because returning Irish construction workers would find it difficult to find anywhere to stay. Doesn’t that suggest that either construction pay is (and therefore building costs) too low and/or property prices are too low?
If they aren’t too low then why can’t the construction employers afford to bid up the cost of construction labour until they can attract sufficient labour? Or is it supposed to be the case that no, property is too expensive relative to the cost of building it, the price could be reduced, the construction companies are just raking in enormous profits and could pay builders more but are just too mean to do so?
Could someone explain?
I qualified as an electrician in 2007 and left in early 2008. Before I emigrated I was on around €21 an hour. Just checked and apparently the rate is now around €26 an hour. No wonder there is a shortage.
