Portugal are good people, a brave and strong country,
It’s going to get bagged by the constitutional court. And Montenegro gets to bolster his populist chops.
Surely those women will take off their burqas and not stay indoors now.
/s
I hope this doesn’t lead to those women being forced into staying at home.
Nice, entire planet should follow
bravo, other EU country will follow 👍
Everyone cheering for this is a prejudiced retard. This is terrible news. Aside from the fact that this is the erosion of rights, this won’t even help the issue of Islamic women being oppressed, infact it might make it worse because many of them will now be forced to stay indoors.
FFS I’m uninstalling reddit for a while now, I can’t deal with how blantantly racist and hateful this community has become or maybe always was.
It’s all a authoritarian sham to ban anything covering your face in the street (few exceptions for health, profession, entertainment, etc.) but when has that ever stopped cops from doing it anyway, lots of people finding the wrong cop in the street and suddenly having to fight off a up to 2000€ ticket in court.
Good. What about niqabs?
Another “free country” mandating people’s clothing.
But remember kids, if it’s banning clothing you like, it’s authoritarian, if it’s clothing you don’t like, it’s liberating and progressive. /s
And of course it’s framed based on burqas so this sub, and most of Europe in general, loves it. If it was openly called a “ban of face coverings so that the police and facial recognition software can monitor everyone in public at all times”, I wager the sub’s reaction would be different. It would be the exact same law by the way, just a different headline.
At this point the UK government can just change its marketing in online spaces from “protect children by catching pedophiles” to “protect Europeans by catching Islamists” and a lot of people would be on board.
This is a logical law but it doesn’t have any real impact. No one really uses burqas in public here.
Useless law. We should’ve just outlawed the practice of Islam, and the problems would solve themselves.
I believe we tackled a non problem. You can go weeks in lisbon and not seing one woman using one. However, its a strong message for the future.
good. they are just tools of opression, civilised muslim countries dont use them either and some even ban them.
turkey, uzbekistan, morroco, etc. you won’t see anyone in a burka.
burkas are only present in countries that abuse islam in order to control women. countries that have even basic freedoms have long abandoned them.
why is that morroco rightfully banned burkas for the benefit of their society, but if an european country does this also, then according to some redditors it’s racist?
This is uncontroversial and already applied in many countries.
I am eager to learn how many thousand burqa-wearers are in Portugal though.
most of these comments explain why europe’s the way it is right now.
I live in Portugal and I’m a Portuguese national.
We have much bigger problems to deal with.

People are concerned about Burkas?
This is a highly conservative government passing a law from a fascist party, soon will be short skirts or other women’s rights.
Well done.
Thank you Portugal.
Is it all face coverings in public or is it just the burqa ?
Unpopular opinion:
what if women want to wear it because of religious beliefs?
Yet another Portugese win 👏🏻
UK and Germany need to step up
sorry for such a question, but is it good or bad? Like, is it for the women to have more freedom or just “evil islam etc etc” stuff?
Good decision by Portugal. However, France’s example shows that this doesn’t stop Islamism from spreading. They discovered face masks during Covid, and since then, some women have been wearing both the veil and the surgical mask.
Big win for secularism and women’s rights!!
Why don’t the losers who have nothing better to do with their Saturdays protest at these countries embassies.
It’s an afront to their religion right? Is it not thought about because the Jews aren’t involved.
We don’t need parallel societies in our countries. People who interpret their religion in that specific way certainly won’t offer much to the societies of the European countries they live in.
