  1. Submission statement:

This article suggests China is trying to avoid their current measures from being exaggerated and limit any subsequent development of rare earth industry within western countries.

  2. This rare earth ban by China is basically putting a knife on our necks, and will not stab us only if we behave in the interest of China. And now is asking us to keep the knife there and don’t panic, we are not stabbing you yet.

China does not want the world to “panic”, meaning reshoring rare earth processing, because that will make the rare earth restrictions less effective in the future. Really treat everyone else as idiots…

Not only the world should rebuild rare earth processing plants for rare earth, but for all other products and materials that are currently dominated by China. These bans from China show us that it is willing to use the market dominating positions to hold the world hostage.

  3. I think it is richly ironic that when the US restricted China’s access to high end chips and the equipment to manufacture them there were plenty of people falling over themselves declaring this was a grave act of self harm because it was just going to encourage China to accelerate development of domestic chip production in order to limit its dependence on foreign suppliers.

But now that the shoe is on the other foot they are very definitely NOT giving the same warning to China. In fact, many of them are still warning the West, this time about how replacing Chinese critical minerals is impossible because its going to take 500 years (or whatever completely arbitrary and totally made up but suitably scary number you prefer) to catch up.

    Curious and curiouser…

  4. There’s not putting that one back in the box. China has made the move, even if they walk it back no one is going to he comfortable with them controlling it. The west will move mountains (literally) to make sure they control their own rare earth mining and processing.

  5. Seems like a strategic time for Canada to lift the tarrifs on Chinese EVs and to put an export tarrif on trade earths. It’ll be hard for the US to say Canada has nothing they want while they are pooping their pants.

  6. Maybe take all the tariffs off Chinese goods that are illegal under WTO rules – that the US made up in the first place! Then, the trade in rare earth metals can return to normal.

  7. The move is worthy of alarm for many countries. Sort of like the US and Europe seizing Russian assets after Ukraine was invaded.

China can dress it up how they like but the die has been cast. Very curious how this plays out for Xi if it backfires.
