The Institute of Maltese Journalists (IĠM) has announced it will donate all submission fee revenue from its annual awards to support journalists in Gaza.
IĠM President Matthew Xuereb declared the €1,000 donation to the International Federation of Journalists’ Safety Fund at Saturday night’s event at Verdala Castle. “The IĠM stands in solidarity with them,” Xuereb stated, referencing colleagues facing “targeted attacks and death” in Gaza.
The ceremony, held under the auspices of the President’s Office, recognised outstanding work across 20 categories. Gabriel Lia, a journalist with RTK/Newsbook Malta, won the award for Journalism that Promotes the Rights of Persons with Disability for an interview on the BTW programme. Lia was also a finalist in three other categories, including Most Promising Journalist and Sports Journalism.
Newsbook Malta photographer Miguela Xuereb placed second in the Best Photojournalism category for her image of the Pope’s funeral.

In his address, Xuereb reiterated calls for the government to fulfil its pledge on media reform, urging a “fair and transparent distribution of government advertising” to ensure media organisations can operate “free from financial pressure.”
