From reporter Kelby Vera:
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson boldly called for Americans to stage a general strike during his speech at his city’s ‘No Kings’ rally on Saturday.
Summoning people of all backgrounds to unite and take a stand against President Donald Trump’s “tyranny,” the “ultra-wealthy” and corporate greed, Johnson said, “We are going to make them pay their fair share in taxes to fund our school, to fund jobs, to fund healthcare, to fund transportation.”
There has never been a true, nationwide general strike in the United States, though a series of post-World War II work stoppages remembered as the “great strike wave of 1946” mobilized five million American workers demanding leaders to address economic instability and untenable working conditions.

Line. It. Up. Let’s do it!
What people don’t seem to realize is that the general strike is coming for them whether or not they want it.
On Nov. 1st, nobody’s going to get benefit checks of any kind. Section 8 housing, disability checks, SS… Nothing. Federal funding is gone. They’ll only get money from state programs that managed to come up with funding workarounds (Red states all failed this process).
We’re on borrowed time and we only have our communities for aid.
Edit: Many comments are pointing out that Social Security and Disability checks are automated by the Treasury. My statement about nobody receiving money from these programs was operating on one of the following assumptions:
* Trump will attempt to impound money for these entitlements.
* Employees at these offices will not be present (after nearly a month of no pay) to help with any discrepancy, new sign-ups, payment disputes etc.
The only payments confirmed to stop so far are HUD/Section 8 payments, and food stamps in states that have not managed to clear their budget shortfall.
This is the answer..
General Strike coming, mmw.
The Government shutdown is comfortable for Trump , his administration, and the republicans, because it costs them almost nothing. This will end under general strike.
Anyone about to respond to me with “but there’s no unions ” “keep dreamin! Lol” or any other bullshit edgy snark, save it. You are fucking out of your element donnie.
Just came back from Italy. They have weekly, general, rolling strikes to support ending the war in Gaza.
Why aren’t Americans in the street on the daily to preserve democracy?
Billionaires will bend the knee so quick if people quit showing up to work cause it will tank their stocks
Look at what happened with the Jimmy Kimmel stuff, as soon as Disney’s pocketbook started getting hit suddenly he was back on the air. Imagine what even more people could do
There we go, finally, calling for some real action.
Also, while he is at it – he should demand that police arrest federal agents who violate state laws (such as arresting people without judicial warrant).
Im in.
Where do I sign up? Blue states pretty much run the economy, use what you’ve got, general strike and shut the ruling class down
The no kings protest was good energy but we need more than that to beat the fascist. General strike is our best tool to defend democracy. Get ready. Stock up on food. Sure would suck if everyone striked on black Friday now wouldn’t it. (Strike on Black Friday, spread the word)
This is exactly what needs to happen. Essentially a no kings rally on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.
Finally someone has said it. Yes, we need a general strike. Federal workers are already furloughed, so now it’s time to get some people to call out sick and burn PTO until this shit changes.
LET’S GO! The regime is already making us go broke, get laid off, no medical care, food and rent off the hook. To all of you who are like “how will I pay rent/food/bills when we strike?” – how do you expect this to play out if we don’t?!?
Wanna insulate yourself and your family during a general strike? Then begin establishing mutual aid with friends and neighbors, volunteer, organize. Talk to your coworkers and/or your union. BE AN ACTIVE PART OF THE EFFORT.
Perhaps folks need to re-read Where Do We Go From Here: [https://kinginstitute.stanford.edu/where-do-we-go-here](https://kinginstitute.stanford.edu/where-do-we-go-here)
My body is ready. When do we get started?
This is what we need and I appreciate Mayor Johnson taking such a bold stance. However we need more leadership calling for a general strike: blue state governors, blue city mayors, elected representatives in the Houses of Congress. It’s time. We’re having these huge No Kings protests but they need to be building towards a greater action that will demonstrate the power of the people. A general strike is the next step.
If y’all are in, I’m in. Let’s get something on the calendar.
Fucking A. Long overdue. We need to remind these billionaire clowns and scumbag politicians that their cushy lives wouldn’t exist without us and without our fucking money.
Finally
Want a simple and effective way to hurt these billionaires that we all just saw was very effective with Disney, cancel your subscriptions, go pick up your own food from your local establishments, make your coffee at home or buy from your local shop. They keep telling us it’s our fault we’re not rich because we waste money so let’s show them they’re right.
He’s 100% correct. Only way to get real change is to bring everything to a halt. The EU does this and this is why they have nice things.
Organize it the way the no kings was organized, bring the country to a halt
Huge demonstrations are like church revivals. More than anything they are for the participants, to renew conviction, make connections, realize they aren’t alone.
Beyond that, it will cycle out of the “flood the zone with shit” news cycle quickly, and the Trump administration can and will simply ignore it and plow forward with Project 2025.
Without action like a strike that forces their hand nothing will change.
He’s right. The Saturday protests ultimately won’t do shit.
You need to cause actual consequences, economic and otherwise. Paralyze physical and economic infrastructure.
Say when.
We had the beginning of a general strike in the early 80’s, in our province (British Columbia, Canada) . It scared the shit out of our provincial government at the time. The first big rally sent a clear message of how pissed off people were. The government backed down almost immediately. If you can get everyone on board it’s one of if not the biggest threat to any government. Good luck and stay strong.
Blue States need to come together an end federal tax transfers.
Black Friday. I will always and forever say this. If we’re going to stage a general strike, do it in the month of November, through Black Friday. Yes. Christmas will be a little lean this year. But this year for Christmas, I got you A Country That’s Gotten It’s Shit Together.
This. Is. What. We. Need!
Hit the billionaires and millionaires right in the wallet. People will be surprised how quickly everyone would abandon Trump.
The “left” is finally courting reality! I’m in! Shut it down!
During my student days I read Henry David Thoreau’s essay On Civil Disobedience for the first time. Here, in this courageous New Englander’s refusal to pay his taxes and his choice of jail rather than support a war that would spread slavery’s territory into Mexico, I made my first contact with the theory of nonviolent resistance. Fascinated by the idea of refusing to cooperate with an evil system, I was so deeply moved that I reread the work several times.
I became convinced that noncooperation with evil is as much a moral obligation as is cooperation with good. No other person has been more eloquent and passionate in getting this idea across than Henry David Thoreau. As a result of his writings and personal witness, we are the heirs of a legacy of creative protest. The teachings of Thoreau came alive in our civil rights movement; indeed, they are more alive than ever before. Whether expressed in a sit-in at lunch counters, a freedom ride into Mississippi, a peaceful protest in Albany, Georgia, a bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama, these are outgrowths of Thoreau’s insistence that evil must be resisted and that no moral man can patiently adjust to injustice.
— The Autobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr.[
Line up line up!!! 7 million people on a general strike would hit them right in the wallet!
bout time someone in power calls for one.
Finally, a politician with courage! Thank you, sir! Thank you Mr. mayor of Chicago! Where are all the rest of the Democratic politicians? They should be an example for us perhaps or maybe hiding is what they think is best. For who?
