French government survives two no-confidence votes but remains fragile • FRANCE 24 English
He lives to fight another day. Prime Minister Sebastian Lucu declared himself satisfied after surviving not one but two no confidence votes in parliament. The first brought by the hard-left France unbowed fell short by just 18 votes. The absolute majority of the members composing the assembly is 289. For the adoption of the motion 271. The required majority was not reached. The motion of censure is not adopted. The second put forward by the farright national rally fell well short of a majority getting just 144 votes. A relief for the prime minister who before the votes called on MPs to take responsibility. This is clearly the moment of truth. Do we want republican order with debates taking place in the National Assembly or do we want disorder? But despite Lukanu’s survival for France unbowed the government remains on fragile ground, Prime Minister Luru and President Macron are on probation. Sooner or later, the president will have to go for the national rally which has been pushing for snap parliamentary elections. The dissolution of parliament remains inevitable. You will have done everything, tried everything, sacrificed everything to avoid returning to the polls, but you will return. But the French prime minister isn’t out of the woods yet. He survived the motions only after offering to suspend Emanuel Mron’s flagship but unpopular pension reform, which got the socialists on board for now. But their continued support is far from guaranteed. If the government doesn’t keep its commitments, in particular over the pension reform, we will of course immediately vote against it. Luknu can now turn to his next and perhaps even bigger challenge, getting a 2026 budget through the bitterly divided parliament before the end of the year.
Embattled French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has survived two no-confidence votes in Parliament, winning crucial backing from the Socialist Party thanks to his pledge to suspend President Emmanuel Macron’s contested pension reform. Despite the reprieve, the motions underscore the fragility of the new government.
