Moldova exported nearly 6,300 tonnes of apples in September 2025, marking an 18% increase compared to the same month in 2024, when shipments totaled around 5,200 tonnes, according to Logos Press.
Data from Moldova Fruct Association shows that apple exports in September had been declining in recent years: 6,300 tonnes in 2023, 9,400 tonnes in 2022, and 22,300 tonnes in 2021. The increase in September 2025 represents a temporary reversal of this downward trend.
Market operators suggest that the uptick is likely tactical rather than strategic. Following mid-September, the export of plums to the EU slowed as farmers and traders focused on storing plums, creating competition for space in industrial fruit warehouses. Some exporters, therefore, redirected supplies from apple orchards to foreign markets.
Price trends also played a role: Wholesale apple prices in September 2025 were approximately 11% higher than in September 2024, which likely encouraged greater exports at the start of the 2025–26 marketing year.
However, in October, extended rainfall in the first half of the month slowed harvesting, which may also affect apple export volumes for the early season. Analysts caution that it is too early to determine whether the September increase marks a genuine upward trend in Moldova’s apple exports or is a short-term fluctuation.
