As state leaders deal with the Trump administration’s crime crackdown, they are also forced to protect their immigrant populations.

According to NPR, experts are worried that the pattern of national guard deployments, and the increase in immigration raids and operations has allowed for violent crime and illegal immigration to be conflated into a single crisis.

While the guard’s actual role in immigration enforcement in these deployments is unclear, legal experts now say there is a connection developing between the trump administration’s use of troops and immigration enforcement tactics.

The National Immigration Law Center, which advocates for immigrant rights, says the administration’s aggressive approach to immigration inspires protests, which are then used as an excuse for the White House to deploy the national guard and other military personnel.
