Weeks after Luxembourg witnessed the historic change of throne, the royal family has welcomed a new member.

Princess Alexandra, who is the younger sister of the new Grand Duke Guillaume, gave birth to a son on Friday.

The new baby has been named Hélie.

Following her father’s abdication on October 3, she moved up to seventh in line to the throne.

Baby Hélie is now ninth in line to the Luxembourg throne, after his sister.

The baby is not expected to have a royal title.

Princess Alexandra and her husband were among the guests who celebrated Grand Duke Guillaume’s accession across three days of celebrations in October.

Grand Duke Guillaume, 43, was sworn in to the country’s top job as the reign of his 70-year-old father, Henri, came to an end after 25 years.

The change of throne took place on October 3 when Guillaume was sworn in after taking the sovereign’s oath in Luxembourg’s parliament, supported by his wife, the now-Grand Duchess Stéphanie.

Guillaume is now the seventh grand duke of the Luxembourg branch of the Nassau-Weilburg dynasty since 1890 when the modern monarchy was established.

The change of throne has also had implications for the new Grand Duke’s son, Prince Charles, who at five-years-old is now the world’s youngest royal heir.

After the papers were signed officially heralding in the new reign, the new Grand Duke and Grand Duchess appeared on the balcony of the Grand Ducal Palace with their two children – Charles and his brother François, two.

The Grand Ducal family were then joined by the King and Queen of the Netherlands and the King and Queen of the Belgians, two other royal families with historic ties to Luxembourg.

The couple’s two young children were included in most of the events, however they showed little interest in the formalities, delighting the thousands of locals who had turned out to see the new royal family with their cheeky antics.
