The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.1 quake in Hungary near Csongrad, Csongrad megye, only 4 minutes ago. The earthquake hit after midnight on Wednesday, October 22nd, 2025, at 12:50 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 3.9 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Csongrad (pop. 18,600) located 4 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Szentes (pop. 27,900) located 13 km from the epicenter, Kiskunfelegyhaza (pop. 31,700) 20 km away, and Hodmezovasarhely (pop. 44,000) 35 km away.
