  1. These planes are super versatile, can land on a highway – am really happy as a Swede (hope they get a huge discount)

  2. For context, this will make Ukraine the largest operator of Gripen aircraft in the world. Sweden has a bit over 100 by reports, and they are aiming for 120 by 2030.

This doesn’t take into account the percentage of Gripens that Sweden will provide that are already built, instead of new manufacture. Didn’t find any reporting on that (yet).

  3. Yeah, 120 by 2080 maybe. They only just got their first Gripen E yesterday.

  4. Probably the best option for Ukraine at the moment.

They’re designed to operate on improvised runways and heavily dispersed over a large area. The ground crew requirements are also fascinating – it’s designed to only need one trained tech for the majority of the work. The remaining 9 or so men of the ground crew are essentially unskilled labourers. Most of the servicing can be done with hex head screw drivers and ratchets and don’t even require a torque wrench.

  5. Sweden WANTS to sell 120 planes to Ukraine . A big difference from ”are to sell”

  6. As a Dane. This is a very good decision. reliable, well-tested, and relatively cheap to keep flying. Also relatively up-to-date with the weapons system. I have to say that it is a good choice.

  7. sell? ffs thought this was about morality and democracy… well, Ukraine has resources and a geographical placement paradoxically (or maybe ironically? idk but you get it…) “because” the fight is for that land, and not… say N.K. so gross and shameful *world*.

  8. It was needed for this decision to happen. If NATO still would block the delivery of the older Gripens to Ukraine the reason can no longer be that the global weapon industry try to make Ukraine to buy another plane. Which is what has been happening for the past year.

  9. Canada has been considering dumping the F-35 for the Gripen and Sweden said they would allow Canada to build the Gripen domestically. I have to wonder if that decision has already been made but not announced yet. Otherwise I don’t know how Sweden can get a steady supply of Gripens to Ukraine in a timely manner.

  10. One of the biggest benefits of Gripen compared to F35 as mentioned nationally by many experts (like the pilot Max Villman) but seemingly less known abroad is that the whole warfare tech in the plane is separate from the aviation tech. This allows for continuous upgrades to software, EW and weapon compatibility much easier than in F35 where everything is more intertwined.

  11. Gripens, 36 more Archers L, a fleet of the very latest CV90 mk4s, anti drone APS systems & Tridons and more

That is some seriously good hardware coming from Sweden!
