  1. It’s the 16-28 rates where Russian fails. War will do that to ya

  2. It is important to point out that these statistics are all self-reported.

That does not mean necessarily that they are incorrect, but in the cases of countries like Russia, they cannot be independently verified.

In any liberal democracy, universities and NGOs can conduct and publish their own independent surveys, which allows people to check if there are discrepancies with the official numbers.

In non-liberal democratic countries, that is often not the case.

  3. wild how the lines basically flipped – if you showed this to someone in the 90s they’d never believe russia would end up below the us in child mortality. makes you wonder how much of that is healthcare improvements vs. US stagnation in public health (maternal care, inequality, opioids, etc)

  4. Last time something like this was posted comparing child mortality in the US vs Europe, I did some digging and found out that much of the difference is due to the US’s very advanced premature intensive care system. Many babies that would be stillborn in other countries are born via premature caesarean section here, and some of those get saved but some don’t … but if they die they count as child mortality rather than stillbirth.

For US vs Western Europe, the paper I found argued that that’s not the only factor, but for US vs Russia it might be.

  5. If this is anything like the stats for the proportion of people in prison, the US tends to do worse because it’s more honest.

  6. US child mortality is also quite bad compared to EU countries whose statistics you can trust.

But the MAGAts won’t care as long as the dead babies don’t have white skin …

(Yes, mortality rates are much higher among black infants than white)

  7. 1991 is the date Russia finally admitted socialism had been a mistake. Soon after abandoning it, their infant mortality started catching up with developed countries.

  8. People are comparing US to Russia like Russia is some kind of mid-African shithole. It’s a developed nation comparable to EU and US on every goddam metric. The graph is not surprising at all.

  9. US has just been in a death spiral since 2015. Well at least Russia has more cannon fodder conscripts now.

  10. If we trust the data of the most civilised and democratic country in the world

  11. Not a 100% sure of the data, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all.

  12. “This is your brain on Reichpublicanism” in chart-form, basically.

When the US goes full-on fascist you see when it stops improving.
