‘PCN Cancelled’: Council U-turn after woman handed ‘unfair and extreme’ £150 fine for pouring coffee down drain

Common sense wins out!
“After reviewing footage, the council said “it is clear that a contravention took place which justified the Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) being issued.
…
“FPNs clearly outline that there is an appeal process available to anyone who wishes to challenge them.
“It is likely that, had this case progressed through that route, the notice would have been rescinded.
“On this occasion, the Council has therefore decided to cancel the FPN,” they added.”

So it was correct but would have been cancelled? I hope it’s hammered until the policy that’s clearly abused is changed.
Say “I don’t want to talk to you” and walk away is all you have to do.
Cool. Now do Thames Water.
Can’t you just walk away from these “enforcement” officers?
Where else are you meant to pour coffee? In the bin, where a pour binman will have a bag dripping in liquid? On a bush? Where?
* TFL bus lane fine: £160, £80 if paid early.
* London parking fines: same
* TFL penalty fare: £100, £50 if paid early.
Is the littering fine also 50% off if you pay on the spot because if not this seems overly expensive.
When you pour cup of coffee down a drain, they want 250 quid. When you pour 100,000 litres of raw sewage down the rivers and waterways, that’s ok because you’re a big company.
Ok I’m confused because I have seen more than 1 bin that has had signs in it saying please pour out liquid before throwing away your can.
Does anyone know how I’m supposed to dispose of the liquid now?
*”We stand by our decision to support the officers’ reasonable and justified action, but after reviewing the inevitably terrible media coverage and widespread consensus that we’re a bunch of cunts, we have rescinded the PCN in order that no more bad publicity be spread about our wholesome and angelic council”*
how many others have suffered unfair fines but didnt go to the newspapers etc
Ok, how about they go and enforce this on Thames Water?
if she wasn’t brown/foreign-looking the enforcement officers would have just warned her
These councils are pathetic, they likely only cancelled it after all the bad press.
Should name and shame the actual jobsworth council workers who initially implement these type of fines, because theyre on some sort of power trip, it’d bring them down a peg or two.
For an environmental point of view, is there any harm here? Obviously chemicals shouldn’t be poured down a drain.
Meanwhile, water companies dispose and treat sewage correctly, do they?
Still not clear on the legality of chucking liquids down a drain.
They mention this was done under Section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Is this council enforcing a national law correctly or are other councils not? Should other councils be doing this? Does it only appy in town centres?
One example would be someone cleaning the path outside their front door with hot water and bleach or something like Jeyes fluid, then sluicing the residue into the street towards the gutter.
Another one is someone washing their car. Another would be window cleaners.
I await their review of their advice on the disposal of liquids in a public place.
What about just drinking it?
Wasn’t there a case couple of years ago of a guy getting a fine because he was eating a roll and crumbs fell on the ground?
BBC did her a favour by putting it on the front page of the website and news app
I am a bit surprised. To be honest, I always thought I was being super considerate when I poured out the remnants of my undrunk flat remaining bit of Diet Coke down a drain and not chucked it into a bin leaving it to slosh around. Yet the LBC article says, “*When asked what she should have done with the remaining coffee, officers told Ms Yesilyurt to pour it in a nearby bin*”
> The council supported the actions of its officers, saying the trio “acted professionally and objectively” in issuing the fine in line with its policies.
Oh dry up. In my town there are bottles of piss all over the street where taxi drivers drop them where they park up. There are people coming out of betting shops in the middle of the day to piss in a bush right outside. We’re allocating police to arresting old folk supporting Palestine. Kids are barging through barriers at tube stations knowing they don’t have to pay a penny. This entire country is a badly-run joke, and councils are topping up revenue by persecuting decent people.
Good! I just wonder if the outcome would’ve been the same if the media hadn’t gotten involved?
