  1. *You have to feel for him and the Murphy family. But I’m not sure anything will change regardless of who wins the presidential election.*

Ryan Casey, partner of murdered schoolteacher Ashling Murphy, has hit out at what he calls Ireland’s “spineless, weak and tolerable” justice system.

Five relatives of her killer, Jozef Puska, were jailed for helping cover up the murder — burning his blood-stained clothes and lying to Gardaí. They received sentences ranging from 20 months to 2½ years, despite the serious nature of their actions.

Casey said the outcome left him “utterly disgusted,” calling for a complete overhaul of sentencing laws and tougher punishments for those who aid killers. He also questioned why such offenders can’t be deported immediately after serving time.

He accused the Puska family of showing zero remorse and supporting the killer in court, and criticised political leaders for failing to deliver on promises to protect women after Ashling’s murder.

“The Irish justice system has failed yet another victim and another family.”

He’s urging people to use their vote in the upcoming Presidential election to show their anger and demand real change.

    What vote is he urging?

  3. Fair play to him. The sentences were a joke. I just hope the family have a hard time in prison.

  4. I’m sorry but these sentences actually reflect the crimes.

This guy is trying to make a platform for himself, what happened to Ashling Murphy was one of the most horrendous acts of violence I’ve ever seen in this country but it doesn’t of mean he is forever beyond reproach. He’s just another person and one with some concerning utterances at this point.

  5. When they finish their prison sentences they should be go back to Slovakia where hence they came. They do not deserve to be supported and housed at the expense of the the Irish Taxpayers Purse.

  6. Our justice system is based on rehabilitation, not revenge. Reputable journalists shouldn’t be putting a metaphorical microphone in front of a young man who is clearly still very angry and bitter. He’s swinging from the Department of Justice, to the courts, to immigration, to the Presidential election. I feel for him, and I’d be just the same or worse, but it’s just undirected anger spilling over.

And nomatter his protestations to the contrary, it’s just more fuel to the fire that brought hundreds of little shits to the City West to bash Gardaí, threaten asylum seekers, and burn vans.

  7. This guy has the right to say how he feels about the sentacing along with her famiy more than any other person. Yes hes angry and he should be. The killer and each one of those family members are a disgrace.

  8. I always thought America’s system of rejecting judges was weird. And in principle I never believed it was a good idea to leave the judiciary exposed to the whims of political populism.

But by Jaysus do I wish it was an elected position these days. For more than a decade now week after week after week we read horror stories and the conclusion is always a weak sentence from a watery judge.

Our sentencing guidelines are a joke as it is with some pathetic maximum punishments. And yet they still allow a carousel of violent criminals with contempt for a society or law and order and scores of prior convictions to get fractions of what they could be getting while also suspending parts of the sentences and allowing the bullshit that is concurrent sentencing.

If there’s any group of people I hate in this country it’s judges!

  9. I want to know why these people who came here over 10 years ago, who never bothered to work, who never bothered to contribute to society, who never bothered to integrate, who sponged off the welfare system, who tried their best as a family to cover up the murder of my partner, were then handed softball sentences and will all be backout and about within our society within 2.5 years, most likely 2 years with “good behaviour” and no doubt will all return to our welfare systems.

To add perspective to this, last year a man was sentenced to 2 years for selling dodgy boxes….

He makes good points. Has nothing to do with nationality for me. These people are just horrible people who are not contributing to society.

  10. It was determined last time that Ryan Casey was racist because of his victim impact statement at the trial of Jozef Puska for murdering Mr. Casey’s girlfriend.

These are members of a vulnerable Roma community.

  11. Wonder what his username is? He sounds like the kinda guy who would get plenty of upvotes here.
