It was not inevitable. It was very much avoidable. People just can’t organize for shit, and our leaders couldn’t be bothered to prioritize the environment over consumption and greed to stop it by the time the deadline came!
Idk even know how we even attempt to tackle this. It’s clear that nobody wants to make the sacrifice to cut down on the carbon footprint. I guess the best shot is to just hope depopulation can slow down before the tipping point occurs?
A true “we’ve tried nothing and we’re all out of ideas” situation here. The oil producers lobby very hard against any real action on climate change and it has resulted in other scammers and hucksters, like Trump and the Republicans in the US, working to dismantle any attempts to even pretend to care about or do anything about climate change, which is happening, is man made, and is going to create massive problems for humanity in our lifetimes.
Remember when these climate people cut down a huge swath of the Amazon rainforest for a one time use highway for their big meeting that these guys would use their gas guzzling private planes and cars to get to?
Feels like im going insane, idk how to not feel constantly panicked when i think through the implications of this. I’m not gonna get to grow old, am I?
We’re literally cooked. They don’t care about the long term implications because they don’t plan on being alive to experience the consequences of their greed. They’d rather buy bunkers and live out some Fallout style apocalypse fantasy than actually work towards solving the underlying issues. A major factor here is US based corporations.
At this point, I’m completely fine with nations subsidizing the oil industry to lower production with the intent to end production. The caveat being that they must be willing to leash their lobbyists and not interfere with politics anymore. They’re already getting allowances anyway. Might as well make it above board. That’ll never happen.
The best thing Americans can do to save the environment, their economy, and their society is fight tooth and nail to get citizens united overturned. Stop the money, stop the legal bribery, and they might have a fighting chance.
These are the same people who said they absolutely will ensure that warming never goes above 1.5 degrees C above pre-industrial levels.
When you are a lying POS in other jobs, you get fired. Get rid of politicians. Put scientists in charge.
There’s a lot of global warming doomerism in this thread, so let me offer a different perspective – We’re NOT going to allow runaway warming to happen!
I don’t say this cos I think climate change isn’t real or anything, but rather cos I think I know how we’re going to tackle it in the end.
How? ***GEOENGINEERING!*** We’re not going to become enlightened and learn restraint to reducing our emissions. We’re failing at that I agree.
Instead when shit hits the fan we’re going to start eating the proverbial forbidden fruit, by which I mean embracing geoengineering solutions to the climate crisis. A number of them are powerful enough to even reverse it all.
You might wonder how we’re going to unite to geoengineer the solution if we can’t unite to reduce emissions? The answer is we won’t. Countries that start to face acute climate related impacts will simply start doing it anyway. For instance, using aerosols to seed clouds over their sovereign skies.
Will this save us? Maybe, maybe not. It might avert a global climate catastrophe, but ofc the reason we avoid using geoengineering to fix climate change now is cos of the high potential for dangerous unintended effects.
Well once climate change really starts to ramp up the damage, I predict countries are going to unilaterally bite that bullet and throwing our current caution to the winds. Geoengineering WILL cause future problems – but hey, that’s the future’s problem! 😅 We’ll reduce the crisis we’re dealing with, and leave dealing with the new one we’re creating for future generations. Sound familiar? 😉🫠
There’s a really great topic that’s starting to be discussed, which is that sibce we do undoubtably have the ability to alter our planets atmosphere and climate to some extent, what’s to say we shouldn’t use that ability to optimize farmable area, melt northern sea routes, etc.
Basically “if we develop safe and viable enough methods to altering earth on a massive level, what are the moral questions that arise and how to tackle them”.
Super interesting lecture about this like a year or so ago, the discussion was still young but I think that they were using “Planetsry politics” as a sort-of placeholder name. Might find papers woth regards to that.
