Nan replying to Bitcoin adverts on Facebook, what could go wrong?
That’s harsh putting Martin Lewis’s name on the headline like he had something to do with it
I’m surprised to see a bank offering a £25,000 loan to an 80 year old woman with no assets.
More accurately, ‘Grandmother gets scammed by unscrupulous conmen who are allowed to operate freely on Facebook’?
Notice that Facebook get off scot-free from any responsibility here
The banks (and fintech company) had multiple warnings in place, questioned the use of the money and even met with the couple in person. There isn’t really much anyone can do if people are going to ignore warnings and even lie to the bank about these types of transactions.
It’s not Martin Lewis’s fault she was scammed. He’s been trying for ages to get Facebook to ban these ads.
A few weeks back I bought a car and bank transferred £17k
I had to go through 6 are you sure messages before the bank did the transfer
They lied about where the money was going. They’re Lucky to get anything back.
STOP BUYING INTO CRYPTO CURRENCIES! Unless you’re already well off and conveniently have access to millions in physical capital to pay off influencers and set up multiple GPU farms to artificially influence the value like they do with mass mining systems you’ll ALWAYS BE THE MARK! Crypto is for them, not for you. It’s the ultra rich tech oligarchs and autocrats selling you your chains on the block. Stop buying into it! It’s nothing more than a digital hamster wheel controlled by those who are consolidating physical wealth and power, that’s all it ever will be. Karl Marx coined the term: ‘fictitious currency’ where in which value of it would be purely speculative and devoid of material substance unlike say things that have tangible use in the world.
This is only going to get worse given where we are with deepfake tech, unfortunately.
Hopefully he takes them to court for defamation/slander, which it definitely crosses over into because of their lack of clarity in the article headline.
It seems like they’ve tried to make it appear as though it’s not Martin Lewis by putting his name in quotes, but I don’t think that’s actually sufficient enough for it to not be classed as defamation/slander, especially since most people are probably going to assume it’s actually Martin Lewis behind it.
I’ve reported a similar one to YouTube using Keir Stamer and YouTube just: “we see nothing wrong with it”
She will have all of this refunded at the banks cost. Same thing happened to the old couple that live by me, builder scammed them for £120k, told the police that he had lost it all gambling. The bank refunded every penny and didn’t even press charges against the plumber
And yet youtube still runs fake ads with AI Lewis and qr codes to scan.
Shout it from the back “SOCIAL MEDIA SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CONTENT THEY PUBLISH” Facebook owes this woman £222k.
It frustrates me so much, obviously these banks can obtain geo-locations for the scam account(s), its not even difficult if you have control of the data; I honestly think we should be sending the army into Nigeria and other places they operate.
