Louvre heist is fourth French museum robbery in just two months • FRANCE 24 English

With four large-scale robberies having taken place since September, security measures at French museums are under scrutiny. One of these robberies also took place in the heart of Paris when 6 kg of gold was stolen from the Natural History Museum after thieves broke in overnight using a blowtorrch. The nuggets are worth 650,000. Just a fortnight before that, two Chinese porcelain dishes as well as a vase were taken from a museum in Limoj in central France. The works are worth €9.5 million. And on the 13th of October, after an unsuccessful attempt the day before, thieves set off with jewelry worth a million from the Jac Museum in the Korez countryside. In some cases, it’s thought gangs may be operating for very rich art collectors. Multi-billionaires can be involved in robberies like these for their personal collections. They’ll hire a group of burglars to steal very specific works. Last year, police advised that museums increase their level of security and even recommended removing certain works. The president of the Louv wrote to France’s culture minister Hasha Dati in January to warn her about a number of flaws in what’s the most visited museum in the world. Dati brushed off any responsibility following the theft. The problem has been swept under the carpet for 40 years. That’s where the responsibility lies. Visitor safety has been paramount. Safeguarding the works has been of lesser concern. But some have said that she should resign. When the Lou has been broken into and that you’ve been warned ahead of time, then it goes without saying if this had been her jewelry, something tells me she would have been more careful.
