Only somewhat related to this post in particular – but I’m always a bit flabbergasted by people who feel like they can spend a few days anywhere and gain any real insights. Especially when it’s a country where you don’t speak the language. Even when you do, truths can be subtle and take a while to reveal themselves.
Now obviously, you can’t get into the mode of thinking you can’t know anything about anywhere unless you have a degree in their history or culture or lived there for decades – but there’s a medium here – this idea that you can go somewhere, talk to a few people in your own language, get on a plane and fly away with any real insights is a bit shallow and arrogant tbh.
Especially when you’re a politician, you just know whoever’s hosting you is putting on a bit of a Potemkin show. Not just picking on the Israelis, the Palestinians presumably do it too and so do Americans, the Chinese and everyone.
