    > The CROATIAN Parliament today, with 84 votes in favor, 30 abstentions and 11 against, amended the Defense Act, thus confirming the reintroduction of mandatory basic military training. Basic military training (TVO) will last two months, with the first calls starting by the end of the year, and the first conscripts in the barracks in Knin, Slunj and Požega are expected at the beginning of next year. As announced by the Ministry of Defense, it is planned to call up around 4,000 recruits annually, divided into five generations. Who will be called up? All 18-year-olds are registered in the military registry, and they will be sent to military training in the calendar year when they turn 19. Before the training, recruits will undergo a medical examination to determine whether they are fit for military training, and the Ministry of Defense states that it will be organized as close as possible to the recruits’ place of residence to make it easier for participants to access it. The examination determines the medical fitness of a potential recruit, the Ministry of Defense announced, adding that those subject to military service may be sent for training or receive a deferment prescribed by law until the end of the 29th year of life, or be exempted from the obligation under the conditions and in the manner prescribed by law.

    >Exceptionally, conscripts older than 19 and up to 30 years of age may also be sent to military training, as service can be postponed in the case of studies and for athletes to participate in world and European championships. Conscientious objection allowed Persons who do not want to participate in military duties due to religious or moral views will be allowed to conscientiously object, and they will complete three months of basic military training in civil protection or in local units for a period of four months

    > For military training, the fee will be 1,100 euros per month, and the training will be included in the length of service, while for civilian service, the fee will be lower, and the amount will be regulated by regulation. Women are not subject to conscription, but they can voluntarily attend basic military training, which is one of the conditions for admission to active military service, and serve in the reserve. Penalty in case of non-attendance The obligation to military training may be released from the obligation to military training by young men who have been assessed as unfit, who have been educated as cadets for at least two years under a contract with the Ministry of Defense, who in addition to Croatian citizenship have a foreign citizenship and have regulated the obligation to undergo military training abroad, students of the police school of the Ministry of the Interior, judicial police officers or ordained priests, deacons, or monks.

    > In case of non-compliance, a police order is issued, and a fine is also provided. A person will be fined for a misdemeanor with a fine of 250 to 1320 euros if he fails to respond to a call to participate in military service, a call to participate in TVO without a justified reason, or if he fails to appear for civilian service without a justified reason, or if he abandons it without a justified reason.

    > Employment preference
A provision is also made according to which an unemployed person who has completed basic military training or voluntary military training, as well as classified reservists who are employed for an indefinite period, will have an employment preference, under equal conditions, in state bodies and administrative bodies of local units.

    > Ahead of the vote, HDZ and DP representatives, Ante Deur and Ivica Kukavica, once again emphasized the need to introduce military training and fill the reserve of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Croatia, and Arsen Bauk (SDP) warned of the different treatment of those who will decide to do civilian service and those who will go for military training.

    > Dalija Orešković (DOSIP) assessed everything as another great deception and hoax by HDZ because the reasons for introducing military training are missing from the explanation.

    > What else does the new law bring?

    > The Parliament also passed amendments to the Law on Service in the Armed Forces, which, among other things, prescribe support for active military personnel who do not have a resolved housing issue at their place of service and are under 45 years of age in cities in which the Croatian Army is territorially deployed, such as Knin, Benkovac, Gospić, Petrinja, Našice, and in the future Beli Manastir.

    > Along with this law, an amendment by the HDZ Club was accepted, stating that a person can be accepted as a soldier/sailor into active military service if they have primary school education, provided that they complete secondary school education by the expiration of the first fixed-term military service contract, with the support of the Ministry of Defense.

    > The conclusion of the Možemo! Club did not receive the required majority of votes. to oblige health institutions to, under equal conditions, when employing for an indefinite period of time based on a public competition, give priority to an unemployed person who does not object to advice when providing health care related to termination of pregnancy, as well as the conclusion of the SDP Club that would task the government with submitting the Civil Service Act for procedure within a year.

  2. My issue with this is that the PARLIAMENT voted on it, not the POPULATION.

It’s easy to condemn young people to the hell that is mandatory conscription when it won’t ever have any effect on you.

  3. So…the service will be 18 to 29? 4.000 people per year?

  4. As always, elderly rich people are very keen on forcing young and poor men to die for them…

  5. How many chances are for people who are at 28, 29 to be called up???

  6. Fuck that. Honestly.

We need more cooperation instead of this bullshit.

  7. Politicians from Croatia, which is suffering from massive brain drain, instead of fighting for more affordable housing, better wages, or diversification of the econmy is just going to waste the youth’s time playing soldier so the older generation can feel nostalgic about when they had to do conscription in Yugoslavia…

At least conscription in Yugoslavia kind of made sense with the Warsaw pact at it’s borders what enemy is Croatia preparing for?

  8. Dark times. Such a waste of young people’s potential.

Young people to fight old men’s wars. Same as it ever was.

Having young people polishing boots and learning to make beds and forcing them (if need be) to give their lives tor the state isn’t a good thing.

  9. Those that do military service (2 months) get 1.100€ per month, but those that will go to civil protection (3 months) will get 250€. Third option: working communal jobs in the city (4 months) for 150€ per month.

Government doesn’t see any discrimination here.

  10. Yeah cause I guess we will be going to war with Serbia soon, oh wait we won’t but we need to do something so the elder’s get a boner for military stuff.

  11. The fish from the Mediterranean sea might attack at any moment

  12. I fucking called it! “An EU member bringing back mandatory military service” was on my 2025 bingo card.

  13. Chill out, it’s just 2 months. There are ten countries in the European Union that have active military conscription. Usually with longer service periods. Plus Norway and Switzerland. Germany is actively planning mandatory service as well.

In the end, we aren’t at peace anymore and our most important military ally, the US, can’t be relied on.

  14. I’m from Finland, i see no problem with this exept maybe the amounts or recruits called up per year.

  15. I imagine the rich and powerful will find a way to not have to do it ?

  16. Coming from a place with very strict and fucky compulsory military service – I’m sorry for you guys. This sucks, even if it’s short.

    The brain-drain *will* be crazy.

  17. Croatian 20 yo perspective: (WARNING: Opinion)
Here, every day there is an obvious, metaphorical pissing on the people — without any shame, without culture, and with the brazenness of the general population that persistently votes against its own interests because the war of the 1990s still rings in their heads. Daddy’s boys and politicians(criminals) who commit treasonous acts but hey, as the old Croatian saying goes: “At least they’re our criminals”.

We have one of the most corrupt judiciaries in the EU, where pedophiles and rapists get six months in prison because their godfather’s aunt’s dog spent three days in some village hit by war — and on top of everything, a mentality that simply won’t allow any vision or progress forward.
The reason why many young people are so opposed isn’t the actual military service, but the corruption filled backward state we are would fight for. If I was, for example, a Finn I would gladly in a heartbeat fight for my country as it’s a good country with good leaders that cares about its people.

I often tell my peers: I’ll take a bullet for Croatia, but by God I will not die for it.”.

  18. Being upset over 2 months is crazy. I’m not even sure that’s enough time.

  19. Y’all motherfuckers trying to make more people leave the country?

I mean, technically they can’t if they get served the papers to go to the military, but they won’t look back twice, or come back if they’d face any legal issues if they dodge serving, and leave the country forever.

  20. not a Croatian so seriously asking:

wtf happens to people who have jobs in the private sector? it’s not like they will just pay you or keep your position warm for 2 months, and they can’t be forced to “rehire” you after training.

so do you just lose your fucking job to get laid 2500euros?

  21. You can not achieve anything other than meatgrinder troops in 2 months…. thats just above what basic training usually is
