The Welsh Rugby Union is set to cut to three teams going forward, with one in the west, one in the east and another in Cardiff, WalesOnline understands.

Players were informed of the news on Friday morning, although all four regions will remain in the short term. They have also been promised further details on the three proposed clubs – which may not share the same branding as the current teams – will be given in the coming weeks.

  1. I mean, I think everyone can agree that change is needed. Let’s hope this works!

  2. So that sounds like Newport, Cardiff and Swansea

  3. Window dressing that ignores a deeper set problem. Welsh rugby needs to cut down player pathways like it needs a hole in its head. This is a dreadful plan.

Only think that properly save Welsh Rugby is a globally aligned Calendar. The regions are failing because every weekend they compete with the clubs for eyeballs and every season they share playing resource with national team.

If the Welsh Rugby calendar emulated that of New Zealand’s it would be far more successful, but to do that requires cooperation with our neighbours to make cross border competitions work.

  4. What you need to do is make the game faster so people are more willing to pay to watch it. Get rid of line outs and scrums and maybe reduce the number of players on the pitch. Wait a minute…

  5. How can having less players playing professionally help?

  6. 4 teams and you have one as your academy team to bring their experience playing men’s rugby. Stop this ridiculous cap system we have also.

  7. Should just abandon the professional nonsense. Semi-pro is what we can afford. I for one don’t care about the astroturf Ospreys: our blood is black — Neath, Neath, Neath!

  8. I know nothing at all about this subject but what about north Wales? Genuine question.

  9. This is another way of saying were merging the Scarlets and ospreys

  10. Would be mildly insane for there not to be a professional rugby team in the second city. The region that has been, by some distance, the most successful of the last generation.. Although that’s hardly a proud mantle for anyone to wear.

But then this is the WRU.
