Glen Scofield, the creator of the popular horror game Dead Space and former head of Striking Distance, is a proponent of using artificial intelligence in game development. However, he strongly doubts that Elon Musk will be able to release the first game generated entirely with the help of AI in the near future.
During a speech at the Gamescom Asia x Thailand Games Show titled «Ten Ways I Come Up with Ideas,» Scofield advocated for the use of generative artificial intelligence as a brainstorming tool in game development, writes PC Gamer.
During the discussion, he described how he uses Midjourney to experiment with visual ideas in the pre-concept stage, as well as how he uses generative AI chat for brainstorming. Scofield believes that the development of AI in game development is almost inevitable.
«History shows that every major technological leap creates entirely new industries, opportunities, and professionals. Artificial intelligence is a technological leap similar to the advent of the PC, the Internet or mobile phones, and like them, it will create a new wave. It will change the way we work and do things. Yes, some professions will change, some will disappear, but over the years new ones will appear — millions of new ones,» he said.
He advised «study artificial intelligence, which will make you better, faster, and more efficient» to become an indispensable employee.
When Glen Scofield was asked what he thought of Elon Musk’s announcement that xAI would release a game created entirely by artificial intelligence by the end of next year, the developer replied that he hadn’t heard of it and seemed very surprised.
«In a year? In a year, they’ll be able to make a game? No, he’s full of crap. That’s what I think. I really want to tell him that», Scofield said.
According to him, there’s one thing game developers hate: when someone outside the industry creates a tool, and when the developers get it, it turns out to be so broken that they don’t know how to make games with it.
Earlier, billionaire Elon Musk announced that his artificial intelligence company xAI is developing «a great game created using artificial intelligence».
Recently, renowned game designer Hideo Kojima, the creator of the Metal Gear and Death Stranding series, shared his thoughts on the use of artificial intelligence in game development. He sees it as an assistant, not a means of creation.
