In the US, suicide rates among teens and young adults are 3X higher than in the EU. In the US, suicide rates have risen since 2000; in the EU, suicide rates have fallen since 2000. In the US, the recent increase in suicides among the youth has been driven by an especially sharp spike among preteens.

Suburbia got more dangerous.
Rates of children getting killed by cars has increased along with the sizes of SUVs and Trucks.
This means that there has been a new threat to children, which has caused parents to become even more protective. Children get driven to school to keep them safe from traffic.
Interesting how the upward trend started at the financial crisis despite the US overcoming it much better than the EU. Maybe it’s a coincidence – it’s also the start of the smartphone era.
