Familiar narratives from those who claim to oppose Putin’s regime continue to circulate.
*“You can’t equate Russia with Putin,“ “not all Russians are guilty,“* and so on.
However, with little understanding of what Russian opposition leaders actually say and do beyond such statements, we must ask the same questions we would ask of any group opposing a bloody regime that wages wars of aggression against its neighbors. This includes a nearly four-year-long full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
*UPD:* There’s a mistake on the slide.
The article states it correctly: *Russia commits war crimes AND crimes against humanity.*
Because Russia has committed — and continues to commit — both.
Given Putin’s history of imprisoning (Nalvany), poisoning (Litvinenko, Nalvany, Skripal) blowing up (Progozhin), shooting (Politkovskaya), Hanging (Berezovsky) or pushing anyone who dares oppose or criticise him out of windows, I’m incredibly skeptical that there is actually any real opposition allowed in Russia anymore.
And those names are just the high profile names that I as a Brit can think of off the top of my head. I’m not in any doubt that people way more knowledgeable than me could come up with many many more.
I’m personally convinced that any “Opposition” are actually just Putin puppets. Controlled parties with leaders on Putin’s payroll, who are allowed to provide the tiniest bit of criticism to his regime to provide a mask of legitimacy, but also who won’t kick up a fuss when he miraculously wins a landslide on a 150% turnout
Nobody ”in Opposition” is really in Opposition. They’re pretending. They’re acting. And most likely compensated handsomely for it.
Any true opposition to Putin is either in prison or dead
It’s crazy what the fear of dying or disappearing can do to a human being.
AFU is the only true opposition.
You can be an opposition to pootin but still have an imperialist mindset.
For example opposition like Igor Girkin is in jail but the guy is worse than pootin.
Many Russians who left ruzzia because of pootin still believe that Russians and Ukrainians are the same. They oppose the war because it kills people, not because they understand that Ukraine and other Eastern European countries want to be independent from any ruzzian influence . I’ve personally met many of those.
Not even slightly hard questions.
The really hard question – where does this post show hard questions or opposition not fighting Putin or opposition echoing Putin or bringing opposition out of the table?
The only actual opposition anymore are people who think Putin isn’t being aggressive enough
Russia has no opposition. Navalny was also an imperialist, I think it’s a good riddance that he died (not the way he died though). His wife is worthless and most probably is relieved that she doesn’t have to ‘suffer’ anymore.
The only real opposition that was present in Ruzzia, was Boris Nemtsov. That dude was fucking amazing, and he got killed.
Politkovskaya and Litvinenko did a good job showing what kind of monster Putin was, but they were not opposition.
Everything could be different, if after Yeltsin, Starovoitova would become president. She had a democratic view, was a strong leader and a woman. Sadly she was shot.
Fuck Russia, it had so many chances to become great, and all of these chances were drowned and silenced.
They want to win the hearts of the uneducated and the fools. It’s a psychological warfare at what that they’re doing and apathetic people are their favorite targets to swing it into Russia’s favor.
They’re destroying the values and morals of anyone who supports Ukraine from within.
What opposition?
That’s the Potemkin-opposition, everyone knows that. They are there to play their part.
There is a distinct difference between a person who seeks to rehabilitate Russia and someone who wants to replace Putin as the head of the mafia empire instead.
Russia needs to be de-Putinified. Like Germany after the war. Yes, ‘cos it really has gone that far. End of.
Russian opposition is the most useless bunch of entitled pricks I have seen in my life
The only true russian opposition to putin is the one opposing with weapons fighting on the Ukranian side, like the Svoboda Rossia Legion and other groups, and the ones sabotaging and providing intel to Ukraine from inside. Anyone else is just theatre…
Russian opposition, if firstly Russian and then Opposition.
So basically, “I don’t care if Ukraine wins… I just want Putin to lose”?
Also might be political suicide to say to a Russian electorate “our country mist be defeated”…
Tisza of Peter Magyar (Hungary) does the same, as in while he condemns the russian aggression his party has abstained in voting in favor on EU policies against Russia. (Maybe to not let Orban have any political ammunition against him or simply bcz he doesn’t want to drag Hungary in the spotlight).
Russia should never be allowed to be part of our world. Isolate them forever, like North Korea.
Reminds me of this quote in Star Trek DS9 by Quark. “*Ferengi workers don’t want to stop the exploitation*. We want to find a way to become the exploiters.”
After the war is over, returning to normal trade policy and diplomatic relations with Russia should only be done after Russia has recogniced that it was the aggressor and Putin and his buddies are before the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity. Fuck Putin and everyone who supports him.
Hey, I know quite a bit of the topic.
There are different kinds of “oppostion” in russia.
The fun part, none of them are real.
It doesn’t matter if they want Stalin or Nicolai II, they support war in Ukraine and tyranny, and putin is fine too.
There was a real opposition in late 90’s – early 00’s. Well, putin took them on the hiking trip and no one saw them ever since.
Now the interesting part. Weaving all the treads I listed in a single narrative is actually the biggest part of russian propaganda. There are fake parties, groups, and political organizations financed by russian goverment.
Their goal is to either convert Communists or Imperialists to putinism, or just set up potential opposition and send them in jail.
All people you see around calling themselves an “opposition” are either direct russian agents or putin wannabes.
The only (substantial) exception is RDK, these guys are real. If there were more guys like them, there wouldn’t be a war in the first place.
its in the name. “russian” opposition
Russians are as lost in their own narrative as North Korea, the US and any other country with a suppressed free media.
Have heard Vladimir Kara-Murza blame ‘The West’ for Putin, not long after his release from prison.
Russia’s future is bleak, if it has a future.
If I was opposition I’d say things that doesn’t make me dead and hope I can survive long enough to win. And then start implementing changes slowly

“Opposition” is a strong word.

There are different kinds of “oppostion” in russia.
1. Communists.
2. Empire fanboys.
3. Orthodox fundamentalists.
4. Nationalists.
The fun part, none of them are real.
It doesn’t matter if they want Stalin or Nicolai II, they support war in Ukraine and tyranny, and putin is fine too.

The loyal opposition exists for show only.
