  1. Sincere question: For people who are actively against measures like the OSA or EU’s DSA cracking down on social media companies and online misinformation – what actually is the solution to this?

How do we as a society overcome the ever growing threat of foreign actors, bot accounts, and manufactured narratives being pushed intentionally online without some form of government or regulatory body monitoring and cracking down on this?

  2. Just wait until AI really gets going.. We already have a culture where it seems very many only skim read.

Recent study of 80+ English majors in US ( mainly on an English degree then). Asked to explain the opening passage of Dickens’ ‘Bleak House’. Of course there are some archaisms, therefore a need to interrogate the passage.Students allowed study aids- eg phones or dictionaries to look up references.

Only 5% understood the passage- could read deeply and for inference. Some even thought the dinosaur reference in the passage meant the characters had actually seen one and that an advocate with ‘whiskers’ actually meant there was a cat in the extract.

There’s an imminent problem with rapid jumping to conclusions on barely read material. Given the capability of AI to manufacture realistic images and then feed those to the most gullible, expect more of this, which will be injurious to any political opinion.

  3. Still, UK taxes on air travellers are the highest in Europe, I think only Germany is in the same ball park.
