  1. These policies are pretty gestural, solar is much more expensive on buildings than it is on the ground. And the limit of solar in the UK is not cost or capital but ability to integrate into the grid due to its intermittency.

  2. Standard large sounding investment which is actually peanuts.

  3. If they get this in with some competent installers the NHS can save some serious money.

100% usage solar can pay for itself in under 3 years. Some of these hospitals can eat 100kWp easy.

We did a small system at a local hospital years ago, no idea why they haven’t done more. Well, we know why. Glad they’re making the push again. Hopefully it’s not going to be handouts for bloated quotes to mates companies.

  4. Isn’t this just ‘government pays for solar in NHS hospitals’ but does it through “Great British Energy” to make it look like their manifesto commitment is being done.

As I understood it, the idea of GBR was to be a state owned energy generator, in the model of France’s EDF. It would invest in generation capacity and compete in the market, but without a profit incentive.

This is just solar on roofs. Loads of people and business have done it, as have the public sector, without needing it organised by anyone else. It’s not an innovative state enterprise competing with the private sector.

  5. Are Labour in danger of doing something useful that I agree with? When’s the u turn happening?

  6. £30M that’s great, almost 1% of the annual cost of Motability!

  7. This is great. I hope they can do similar for schools next. Will help the schools budgeting and the buildings’ usage matches solar generation on the hole.

  8. Well this is an interesting thread.

Government body does something that is expected to return a positive investment whilst helping achieve environmental targets.
